Op onze afdeling werken we met een dagmenu en een per patiënt. Bij opname noteert de verpleegkundige en , zodat de keuken het menu op tijd kan . On our ward we use a daily menu and an individualized nutrition plan for each patient. At admission the nurse records dietary preferences and allergies so the kitchen can adjust the menu in time. For diabetes (sugar disease) we pay extra attention to blood glucose levels and more often choose fiber-rich foods and products with a low glycemic index. This helps patients keep their energy up and prevents large fluctuations.

For some patients a carbohydrate or salt restriction applies. In those cases we serve smaller portions and avoid sweet snacks. A low-fat meal may be necessary for chronic conditions or for patients with reduced mobility. During the evening shift we check whether the adjusted menu has arrived and we talk with the patient afterward about what went well and what did not. If something is unavailable, we recommend an alternative that matches the nutritional value and the patient’s energy needs.

Voor de avonddienst kijk ik het voedingsschema van mevrouw De Vries nog even na. Ze heeft suikerziekte, dus we letten op haar bloedsuikerspiegel en houden een koolhydraatbeperking aan.
