This week the intranet of our home-care organisation features a short update about privacy and quality of care. In the team meeting it emerged that colleagues sometimes share too many details — for example in the lift or at the supermarket — about a fall or about medication. That can compromise the client’s privacy, even if you don’t use a name. Therefore, don’t discuss recognisable situations outside the client’s home and lock your phone. You may only open the medical record if you are directly involved in the client’s care.

The update also stresses the client’s autonomy. Discuss the care plan and ask for permission before you share information with family, the GP or other care professionals. Briefly explain why you need the information and record this in the file. If in doubt, consult your team leader or the privacy officer. If a mistake has been made, report it via the incident form. This helps improve quality of care and prevents recurrence.
