Exercise 1: Writing correspondence
Instruction: Write a reply to the following message appropriate to the situation
E-mail: You receive an email from your ward manager, Ms Keller. You should briefly reply in writing to the email and report the condition of a patient for the late shift.
Betreff: Kurzer schriftlicher Bericht für den Spätdienst
Guten Morgen Frau / Herr ...,
ich brauche heute für den Spätdienst einen kurzen Bericht zu zwei Patienten. Bitte schreiben Sie bis 14:30 Uhr eine kurze Notiz in das Übergabebuch.
Wichtig ist besonders Herr Meier (Zimmer 12):
- Gestern Abend hatte er Fieber (38,5°C). Heute Vormittag ist die Temperatur fast stabil (37,9°C).
- Die Medikation gegen Fieber: Paracetamol 500 mg um 08:00 Uhr. Bitte gut dokumentieren.
- Die Vitalwerte waren um 10:00 Uhr: Puls 88, Blutdruck 135/80, Sauerstoff 97 % – also unverändert zum gestrigen Befund.
- Herr Meier klagt etwas über Kopfschmerzen, aber keine neue Verschlechterung vom Zustand.
Bitte:
- beobachten Sie Herrn Meier bis 14:00 Uhr weiter,
- berichten Sie kurz, ob der Zustand stabil, besser oder schlechter ist,
- und schreiben Sie, ob Sie etwas mit dem Arzt abklären mussten.
Der Spätdienst soll bei der Übergabe schnell sehen: Wie geht es Herrn Meier jetzt? Gibt es neue Anweisungen vom Arzt?

Good morning Mrs. / Mr. ...,
I need a short report on two patients for the late shift today. Please write a brief note in the handover book by 2:30 pm.
Particularly important is Mr. Meier (Room 12):
- Last night he had a fever (38.5°C). This morning the temperature is almost stable (37.9°C).
- The medication for fever: Paracetamol 500 mg at 8:00 am. Please document carefully.
- The vital signs at 10:00 am were: pulse 88, blood pressure 135/80, oxygen 97% – therefore unchanged compared to yesterday’s findings.
- Mr. Meier reports some headache, but no new deterioration of his condition.
Please:
- continue to observe Mr. Meier until 2:00 pm,
- briefly report whether his condition is stable, improved, or worse,
- and note whether you had to clarify anything with the doctor.
The late shift should be able to see quickly at the handover: How is Mr. Meier now? Are there any new instructions from the doctor?
