On our internal medicine ward, many patients receive beta blockers . These drugs act on the cardiovascular system and can lower blood pressure. Before administration, nurses always check for contraindications and possible side effects such as dizziness or a very slow pulse.

Sehr geehrte Frau Schneider,

vielen Dank für Ihre E-Mail zu Frau Müller.

Als Injektionsstelle halte ich die ventrogluteale Region für geeignet, weil dort meist noch ausreichend Muskelmasse vorhanden ist und das Risiko für Nerven- und Gefäßverletzungen geringer ist als z.B. im Deltoid. Den Vastus lateralis würde ich nur wählen, wenn die Patientin an der Hüfte nicht gut gelagert werden kann.

Die Nahrungsaufnahme möchte ich in den ersten Tagen dokumentieren, z.B. mit einem Trink- und Esstagebuch. Ich werde Frau Müller mehrmals täglich nach Appetit, Übelkeit und Beschwerden fragen und sie motivieren, kleine, energiereiche Portionen zu essen. Außerdem würde ich bei anhaltender Appetitlosigkeit die Ärztin informieren, um eine mögliche Supplementierung zu besprechen.

Dear Ms. Schneider,

Thank you for your e-mail about Mrs. Müller.

I would consider the ventrogluteal region the most suitable injection site because there is usually enough muscle mass there and the risk of nerve or vessel injury is lower than, for example, in the deltoid. I would choose the vastus lateralis only if the patient cannot be positioned comfortably at the hip.

I would document the patient’s food and fluid intake during the first days, for example with a food and drink diary. I will ask Mrs. Müller several times a day about appetite, nausea and any discomfort, and encourage her to eat small, energy-dense portions. If loss of appetite persists, I would notify the physician to discuss possible supplementation.
