The main steps the assistant must prepare and follow during an endodontic treatment (root canal treatment).

Bij een wortelkanaalbehandeling wordt eerst een rubberdam geplaatst, zodat de tand schoon blijft. Daarna haalt de tandarts de cariës weg en opent hij de tand. Met instrumenten wordt de lengte van het kanaal gemeten, met een röntgenfoto of een apex locator. Tijdens het werk wordt veel gespoeld en gebruikt men natriumhypochloriet om te reinigen. Na het drogen wordt het kanaal gevuld met guttaperchapunten en wortelkanaalcement.

De rubberdam wordt geplaatst om de tand te isoleren van de rest van de mond. (The rubber dam is placed to isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth.)
Met speciale boren wordt de vorm van de caviteit gemaakt en de cariës weggehaald. (With special burs, the shape of the cavity is made and the caries is removed.)
De koelnevel wordt weggezogen terwijl ik werk. (The cooling spray is suctioned away while I work.)
Het pulpadak en de pulpa in de kamer worden langzaam verwijderd met een ronde boor of curette. (The pulp chamber roof and the pulp in the chamber are slowly removed with a round bur or curette.)
Met wortelkanaalinstrumenten zoek ik de ingang van de wortelkanalen en bepaal ik de lengte. (With root canal instruments, I look for the entrance to the root canals and determine the length.)
Dit gebeurt met een röntgenfoto of een apex locator. (This is done with an X-ray image or an apex locator.)
De lengte wordt genoteerd en alle instrumenten worden in de juiste volgorde gebruikt. (The length is noted and all instruments are used in the correct order.)
Tijdens het vormen van de kanalen wordt veel gespoeld om te reinigen en te ontsmetten. (During shaping of the canals, a lot of rinsing is done to clean and disinfect.)
Ontsmetten kan met natriumhypochloriet en drogen gebeurt met papierpunten. (Disinfection can be done with sodium hypochlorite and drying is done with paper points.)
Na het drogen vul ik de wortelkanalen met guttaperchapunten en wortelkanaalcement. (After drying, I fill the root canals with gutta-percha points and root canal cement.)
