At a dental practice in Utrecht, dental hygienist Eva has a new patient, Mr. Rossi. He is well educated and spends a lot of time working at the computer. He does brush his teeth, but he does not use dental floss or interdental brushes. His gums sometimes bleed when he brushes.

Bij een gewone gebitsreiniging halen we vooral de plak en het supragingivale tandsteen weg <strong>bóven</strong> het tandvlees. Bij scaling en rootplaning maken we de worteloppervlakken <strong>onder</strong> het tandvlees schoon. We gaan dan dieper in de pockets rond de tand om de ontsteking van het tandvlees te verminderen.

Bij uw volgende afspraak controleren we eerst het tandvlees en meten we de pockets. Daarna verwijderen we vooral het tandsteen boven het tandvlees en maken we alles goed schoon. Alleen als we nog diepe plekken zien, reinigen we nog een keer onder het tandvlees.

Voor thuis adviseer ik u:
- Poets twee tot drie keer per dag met een zachte tandenborstel.
- Gebruik elke avond flossdraad of interdentale ragers tussen de tanden. Kies ragers als de ruimte groter is, anders floss.
- Mondspoeling met chloorhexidine hoeft u nu niet elke dag te gebruiken. Dat is alleen tijdelijk, bijvoorbeeld 1 à 2 weken na een behandeling. We kunnen dit samen nog eens bespreken tijdens uw afspraak.

Thank you for your email and your questions.

In a regular dental cleaning we mainly remove plaque and supragingival calculus <strong>above</strong> the gumline. With scaling and root planing we clean the root surfaces <strong>below</strong> the gumline. This allows us to treat the deeper pockets around the teeth and reduce gum inflammation.

At your next appointment we will first examine your gums and measure the pocket depths. After that we will mainly remove the calculus above the gumline and clean thoroughly. If we still find deep sites, we will clean under the gumline again.

For home care I advise you:
- Brush two to three times a day with a soft toothbrush.
- Use dental floss or interdental brushes every evening between the teeth. Choose interdental brushes if the spaces are larger; otherwise use floss.
- You do not need to use chlorhexidine mouthwash every day now. It is usually used temporarily, for example 1 to 2 weeks after a treatment. We can discuss whether you should use it at your appointment.
