You will soon have a wisdom tooth extracted. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. Sometimes the dentist gently folds the gum back (a mucoperiosteal flap) to gain better access to the tooth. If the tooth is firmly stuck, the dentist may use a surgical drill and remove the tooth in sections. Dissolvable stitches are usually placed afterwards. Sometimes the dentist puts a hemostatic sponge in the socket.

After the procedure, bite firmly on sterile gauze for 30 minutes. Do not rinse during the first 24 hours and do not touch the wound with your tongue or fingers. Eat soft foods and avoid alcohol. Do not smoke, as smoking delays healing. If bleeding continues: place a fresh gauze and bite down again for 30 minutes. Contact the practice if you develop a fever, if swelling increases, or if the bleeding does not stop.
