(The upper right quadrant corresponds to number one, the upper left to number two, the lower left to number three, and the lower right to number four.)
(In the numbering system, each tooth is identified by two digits: the quadrant and the position of the tooth, from one to eight.)
(Permanent teeth are numbered from eleven to eighteen for quadrant one, from twenty-one to twenty-eight for quadrant two, from thirty-one to thirty-eight for quadrant three, and from forty-one to forty-eight for quadrant four.)
(Each tooth is asymmetrical, and this asymmetry concerns all of its parts.)
(A tooth is made up of three parts: the crown, the neck, and the root.)
(The crown is covered with enamel, the neck is the transition area, and the root is covered with cementum.)
On distingue plusieurs faces dentaires : mésiale, distale, vestibulaire, linguale et occlusale. (Several tooth surfaces are distinguished: mesial, distal, vestibular, lingual, and occlusal.)
(The occlusal, or chewing, surface is in contact with the tooth of the opposite arch.)
(The tooth is mainly made of dentin, covered with enamel at the crown and with cementum at the root.)
(Dentin surrounds the pulp cavity, where the dental blood vessels and nerves pass.)

(In FDI numbering, which number corresponds to the upper right quadrant?)

(What are the three main parts of a tooth?)

(Where do the dental blood vessels and nerves pass?)

Exercise 2: Dialogue

Instruction: Read the dialogue and answer the questions.

The patient consults their dentist about sensitivity to cold on a molar
(Doctor, I have sensitivity on this molar when I drink something cold.)
(This molar? Ah yes, I see. There is gingival recession and part of the root is exposed.)
(Why does that cause sensitivity?)
(Because the root is covered with cementum, not enamel, and underneath there is dentin.)
5. Le patient: Et la dentine est sensible ? (And dentin is sensitive?)
(Yes. It contains tubules that communicate with the pulp chamber, where the pulp nerve is located.)
7. Le patient: Je comprends. Est-ce que c'est traitable ? (I understand. Is it treatable?)
(Yes, we can place a composite to cover the dentin and protect the pulp.)
9. Le patient: La dent restera aussi solide ? (Will the tooth remain just as strong?)
(Yes, of course. As long as the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone are healthy, the root remains stable.)

(What explains the sensitivity to cold on this molar?)

(What treatment does the dentist propose to protect the tooth?)
