Il existe deux grands types de prothèses : les prothèses complètes et les prothèses partielles. (There are two main types of prostheses: complete dentures and partial dentures.)
Les prothèses complètes, ou dentiers, sont utilisées lorsqu'il n'y a plus de dents sur une mâchoire. (Complete dentures (dentures) are used when a jaw has no remaining teeth.)
Les prothèses partielles remplacent seulement quelques dents manquantes. (Partial dentures replace only a few missing teeth.)
Les prothèses partielles s'insèrent parmi les dents naturelles restantes. (Partial dentures fit among the remaining natural teeth.)
Elles s'appuient sur les dents restantes grâce à des crochets. (They are supported by the remaining teeth using clasps.)
La structure peut être entièrement en résine ou comporter une armature métallique à l'intérieur. (The structure can be entirely resin or can include an internal metal framework.)
L'armature métallique apporte plus de finesse, de solidité et de stabilité à long terme, avec plus de rigidité et moins d'épaisseur en bouche. (A metal framework provides greater finesse, strength, and long-term stability, offering more rigidity with less bulk in the mouth.)

The denture that no longer fits well
1. Patient: Docteur, une des dents qui retient ma prothèse bouge beaucoup. Qu’est‑ce que vous pouvez faire ? (Doctor, one of the teeth that holds my denture is very loose. What can you do?)
2. Dentiste: Cette dent a une grande mobilité. Nous devons l’extraire pour éviter la douleur et une infection. (This tooth is very mobile. We need to extract it to prevent pain and infection.)
3. Patient: Et comment ma prothèse va‑t‑elle tenir s’il manque cette dent ? (And how will my denture stay in place if that tooth is missing?)
4. Dentiste: Votre prothèse squelettique est très ancienne et elle n’adapte plus bien. Il n’est pas conseillé d’y ajouter une dent. (Your metal framework denture is very old and no longer fits properly. It's not advisable to add a tooth to it.)
5. Patient: Alors, quelle solution est‑ce que j’ai ? (So, what are my options?)
