Internal note - Treatment room

For patients with gingivitis or periodontitis, we start with an assessment: detection of pockets with a periodontal probe. A scaling removes tartar above the gumline. If the pockets are deep, we perform root planing under local anesthesia, using ultrasound and a periodontal curette.

After the treatment, explain oral hygiene at home: a soft toothbrush, dental floss or interdental brushes every evening. A chlorhexidine mouthwash is possible for a few days if the dentist prescribes it.

(Hello Mrs Leroy, I observe gingivitis and a bit of supragingival tartar.)

(Oh okay… is it the same thing as periodontitis?)

(No, periodontitis is deeper; today I’m proposing an ultrasonic scaling. At home, brush your teeth and use interdental brushes.)

(Can I also use dental floss?)

(Yes, dental floss is a good option. If your gums are still bleeding, you can use a chlorhexidine mouthwash for a few days.)

Objet : Question après mon rendez-vous

Bonjour Docteur Martin,

Merci d’avance,
Claire Dupont

Subject: Question after my appointment

Hello Dr Martin,

Thank you for yesterday’s session. You did a scaling and you mentioned a “deeper cleaning under the gum”. I was told before that I might have periodontitis, and that worries me. Is this cleaning like a normal scaling? Does it require anesthesia?

And at home, should I use dental floss or interdental brushes?

Thank you in advance,
Claire Dupont

Bonjour Madame Dupont,

Bien cordialement,
Dr Martin

Hello Mrs Dupont,

Thank you for your message. Scaling mainly removes tartar above the gum. When there is inflammation and gum pockets, we can do a deeper cleaning called root planing. This treatment cleans under the gum and may require local anesthesia depending on sensitivity and the extent of the treatment.

At home, brush your teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush. For the spaces between the teeth, interdental brushes are often more effective than dental floss — bring one to the next check-up so I can choose the right size.

Kind regards,
Dr Martin
