Indicating a Specific Moment in French

This lesson covers how to express specific points in time using French prepositions. Understanding these helps you accurately place events on the calendar or clock, which is essential for everyday conversations such as setting appointments, describing routines, or talking about dates.

Key Prepositions to Express Time

  • À: Used before a precise hour. Example: Je vois ma famille à vingt heures.
  • Le: Used before dates or days of the week. Example: Tu fêtes ton anniversaire le 3 mai.
  • En: Used before months, seasons, or years. Example: Elle part en vacances en juillet.
  • Au: Used before centuries. Example: Il est né au 18ème siècle.

Additional Notes on Usage

Putting le in front of a day of the week describes a habitual or repeated action. For example, Je vais au basket le samedi means you regularly go to basketball on Saturdays.

Examples Summarizing the Lesson

  • Je prends le bus à huit heures du matin.
  • Nous allons au garage le samedi.
  • Elle conduit la voiture en juillet.
  • Il a eu son permis au 21e siècle.

Differences and Useful Expressions Compared to English

Unlike English, which often omits prepositions in similar contexts (e.g., "on Monday," "in July," "at 5 PM"), French uses distinct prepositions that correspond specifically to time references. The French le before days of the week can indicate habitual actions, which differs from English where the article is not used in this way. Knowing these subtle distinctions is important for accurate and natural French communication.

Useful expressions include: à huit heures (at eight o'clock), le lundi (on Mondays/habitually), en été (in summer), and au XXe siècle (in the 20th century).
