In many teams, leadership and control are confused. A good manager doesn’t need to always be confident or to speak the loudest. They are often straightforward and realistic: they say when things are going well and when they aren’t, without humiliating anyone. They take others into account, encourage initiative, and clarify priorities. Result: the team feels committed and works better.

Conversely, a manager who is too ambitious or explosive creates tension. Some colleagues, who are reserved or introverted, no longer dare to give their opinion, even if they have team spirit. After a difficult project, several employees said: « I would have preferred to follow a simpler method » or « I should have handled disagreements earlier ». Saying what we feel helps prevent problems from taking hold.

(What behavior by the manager prevents some colleagues from giving their opinion, and what could the manager do to change that?)

Retour après réunion tendue

Nadia (cheffe de projet): Show Tu as deux minutes ?

(Do you have two minutes? The meeting went a bit off the rails, especially between Thomas and Julie.)

Julien (collègue): Show Oui…

(Yeah… Thomas is very sure of himself, almost volcanic, and Julie is rather reserved, so she doesn’t dare to speak up.)

(I agree, but Thomas is also ambitious and efficient — he gets straight to the point. He just needs to take others more into account.)

(As for Julie, she is sensitive and serious, she has team spirit. If we prompt her, she can take initiative.)

Nadia (cheffe de projet): Show D’accord.

(Agreed. Next time I’ll set speaking turns and I’ll ask Julie to prepare her point. And I’ll talk to Thomas: straightforward, yes, but without being overbearing.)

Bonjour,

Claire Martin

Hello,

Thank you for your participation in yesterday's meeting. However, I sensed some tension in the team. Several people feel that Thomas is very self-confident and sometimes too blunt in his remarks. On your side, you seem rather reserved, and we don't always know what you think.

Since we have to deliver the first version on Friday, I need your feedback: how are you experiencing collaboration at the moment, and what could help the team to better take others into account?

Have a nice day,
Claire Martin

Bonjour Claire,

Hello Claire,

Thank you for your message. To be honest, I'm a bit tired of the current atmosphere. It stresses me when remarks are too direct in meetings, because some people no longer dare to speak up. As for me, I admit that I'm quite reserved: I need time to think and I don't always speak up.

I find that Thomas is efficient and self-confident, but he could tone down his criticism. I would have preferred that we set a few simple rules: that everyone speaks in turn and that we end with specific action items. We could also plan 10 minutes at the end of each meeting to check that everyone agrees and that we take others into account.

If you want, I can send a short summary after the meeting with the decisions and tasks.

Have a nice day,
