To ask (without sounding demanding): ¿Podrías…?, ¿Te importaría…?
To give an opinion (without sounding absolute): Creo que…, Me parece que…, Yo diría que…
To refuse / set limits (without sounding harsh): Lo siento, pero…, En este momento no va a ser posible…, De acuerdo, pero…, Es que…

Polite requests: conditional = “could / would”

Spanish often uses the conditional to make a request less direct.

More polite (recommended)	More direct

¿Te importaría esperar un momento?	~~Espera~~ un momento.

¿Podrías…? = “Could you…?” (very common in workplace contexts)
¿Te importaría…? = “Would you mind…?” (sounds especially considerate)

Key structure: “¿Te importaría… + infinitive?”

After ¿Te importaría…? you normally use an infinitive (not a conjugated verb).

✅ ¿Te importaría esperar un momento?
❌ ¿Te importaría ~~esperas~~ un momento?

Shortcut to self-check: if you can translate it as “Would you mind waiting…?”, you need the infinitive.

Asking someone to repeat: choose the right level of formality

In professional situations, you often switch to usted.

¿Cómo dice? is like “Sorry?” / “Pardon?” (common on the phone or in meetings).
No le he entendido bien is a polite way to say you didn’t understand (not blaming the speaker).

Giving opinions diplomatically: “I think…” + softer grammar

To avoid sounding too certain, Spanish often uses softeners:

Creo que… / Me parece que… = “I think…” / “It seems to me…”
Sería (conditional) = “would be” (less absolute than es)

Yo diría que no es exactamente así.	No es así.

Professional tip: Yo diría que… is great when you want to disagree without sounding confrontational.

Refusing and setting limits: the “apology + but + limit” pattern

A very common professional structure is:

Lo siento, pero + limit / impossibility

Lo siento, pero no va a ser posible.
En este momento no va a ser posible.

Why “va a ser”? It’s a natural way to say “it won’t be possible” (often about now / today / this time).

✅ Hoy no va a ser posible registrarse.
✅ Ahora mismo no va a ser posible.

“De acuerdo, pero…”: agreeing first to disagree politely

Use this when you want to show cooperation, then add a boundary.

De acuerdo, pero preferimos esperar.
De acuerdo, pero hoy no podemos confirmarlo.

Self-check: if your message starts with “No”, consider starting with De acuerdo, pero… instead.

“Es que…”: giving a reason without sounding defensive

Es que… introduces a short explanation. It often feels less rigid than a direct refusal.

Es que tenía otro compromiso.
Es que ahora mismo estamos con otra reunión.

Keep it brief. In professional Spanish, one clear reason is enough.
