Saber and Conocer

Saber y Conocer

Tanto saber como conocer expresan conocimiento, pero se usan de manera diferente.

(Both saber and conocer express knowledge, but they are used differently.)

Saber vs. conocer: what you “know” in Spanish

English uses to know for many meanings. Spanish splits it into two verbs:

  • saber = information, answers, skills, procedures
  • conocer = people, places, things you are familiar with (experience)

Quick decision test (10 seconds)

  1. Is it a fact / answer / piece of information? → use saber
  2. Is it a skill or procedure (how to do something)? → use saber
  3. Is it a person, a place, or “being familiar with” something? → use conocer

Use saber for facts, answers, and results

  • saber + dato / hecho / resultado
Meaning Example (Spanish) Natural English
Knowing a result El técnico sabe el resultado del análisis. The technician knows the result of the analysis.
Knowing an answer No la respuesta. I don’t know the answer.

Self-check: Can you replace “know” with “have the information / have the answer”? If yes → saber.

Use saber for skills and procedures (how to do something)

  • saber cómo + infinitivo = knowing how (steps/method)
  • saber + infinitivo = being able to (skill)
Structure Example (Spanish) Natural English
saber cómo + infinitive Nosotros sabemos cómo aplicar el método correcto. We know how to apply the correct method.
saber + infinitive El equipo sabe manejar material electrónico. The team knows how to handle electronic equipment.
  • Very common mistake: Conozco cómo aplicar el métodoSé cómo aplicar el método

Use saber de for “knowledge about a topic” (professional expertise)

When you mean “to know about” a field/subject (not a specific fact), use:

  • saber de + tema
Meaning Example (Spanish) Natural English
Having expertise El departamento sabe de química aplicada. The department knows about applied chemistry.

Self-check: If the topic could be your “area of expertise” → saber de.

Use conocer for people: knowing / having met someone

  • conocer a + persona
Spanish Meaning
La investigadora conoce al biólogo del proyecto. She knows (is acquainted with) the project’s biologist.
Ayer conocí a la nueva coordinadora del laboratorio. Yesterday I met the new lab coordinator (first time).

Key point: conocer can mean “to know” and “to meet” (for the first time), depending on context.

Use conocer for places and “familiarity” with things

  • conocer + lugar (a lab, a city, a building)
  • conocer + objeto / contexto (a protocol, a system, a procedure as a “known framework”)
What you know Correct Not this
A place ¿Conoces el laboratorio de microbiología? ¿Sabes el laboratorio...?
A protocol / system you’re familiar with No conozco el protocolo estéril de este laboratorio. No sé el protocolo estéril...

Self-check: If you mean “I’m familiar with it / I’ve worked with it / I’ve experienced it” → conocer.

Mini checklist: choose the right verb in conversation

  • saber: facts, results, data, answers; skills and procedures (cómo + infinitive)
  • conocer: people (a), places, and things you are familiar with (protocols, systems, environments)

If you hesitate, ask yourself: information/ability (saber) or familiarity/experience (conocer)?

  1. Saber ⇒ information, skills
  2. Conocer ⇒ people, places, experiences
FormaEjemplo
Saber + dato, hecho, resultadoEl técnico sabe el resultado del análisis. (The technician knows the result of the analysis.)
