Demonstratives: ese, eso, esto

What these words really do (quick map)

• esto = this idea/situation (new / just introduced)
• eso = that idea/situation (already mentioned / shared knowledge)
• ese/esa (+ noun) = that specific thing (an identified object/result/document)
• estos otros + plural noun = these other … (contrast: not the first ones)

Step 1: Are you pointing to an idea… or to a thing?

• Idea / situation (a whole fact, what happened, a proposal) → usually esto or eso.
• Thing (a concrete, countable item: result, report, document, option) → usually ese/esa + noun.

• Common mistake: eso cannot work like “that” before a noun.
  

  Eso resultado → Ese resultado

Step 2: If it’s an idea, decide: new (esto) or already known (eso)?

• Use esto when you introduce a new point, a new concern, a new proposal.
• Use eso when you refer back to something already mentioned, or something both people clearly know.

• Useful self-question: Am I introducing it now? → esto. Am I referring back? → eso.

Step 3: If it’s a thing, match gender/number (ese/esa/esos/esas)

• ese + masculine singular noun: ese resultado, ese informe
• esa + feminine singular noun: esa prueba, esa cita
• esos/esas + plural noun: esos documentos, esas pruebas

Two practical exceptions you will actually use

• “Ese/esa” without a noun is possible only when the noun is obvious from context:

  Ese resultado es correcto → Ese es correcto.

• “Estos otros” is for contrast and must be followed by a plural noun:

  Prefiero estos otros controles prenatales.

  Prefiero estos otros. (needs the plural noun in this pattern)

   • Idea/situation → esto / eso

2. If it’s an idea: new now (esto) or referring back (eso)?
