The present subjunctive, the regular verbs: deje, responda, reciba...

El presente de subjuntivo, los verbos regulares: deje, responda, reciba...

El presente de subjuntivo se usa para expresar deseos, recomendaciones o necesidades. Normalmente se usa después de expresiones como quiero que o es importante que.

(The present subjunctive is used to express wishes, recommendations, or needs. It is normally used after expressions such as quiero que or es importante que.)

What you’re looking at: Present Subjunctive (regular forms)

Que + verb is a classic signal of the present subjunctive.

  • It often appears after expressions like es importante que…, quiero que…, necesitamos que…, te pido que….
  • Use it when the first person doesn’t state a fact, but expresses a request, need, recommendation, importance, or intention about what someone else should do.

The 2-part “trigger + change” checklist

  1. Trigger: Is there a phrase that pushes the subjunctive? (e.g., es importante que, quiero que, recomiendo que.)
  2. Change of subject: Does the subject change after que?
    • Yes → subjunctive is very likely.
    • No → Spanish often prefers infinitive instead.
With change of subject → subjunctive No change of subject → infinitive
Quiero que tú respondas. Quiero responder.
Es importante que usted deje su número. Es importante dejar el número.

How to form it fast (the “yo” method)

Use a reliable shortcut:

  1. Take the yo form of the present indicative.
  2. Remove the final -o.
  3. Add the subjunctive endings.
Step Example: dejar Example: responder Example: recibir
1) “yo” present yo dejo yo respondo yo recibo
2) remove -o dej- respond- recib-
3) add endings que yo deje que yo responda que yo reciba

The key pattern: endings “flip”

The most common mistake is using the indicative endings. Remember: -ar flips to e, and -er/-ir flip to a.

Infinitive Present subjunctive endings Quick memory
-ar e, es, e, emos, éis, en -ar → e
-er / -ir a, as, a, amos, áis, an -er/-ir → a

What to pay attention to (typical errors)

  • Don’t keep the indicative after a trigger:
    • Es importante que me respondes… → Es importante que me respondas
  • Match the person (tú / usted / ustedes):
    • Quiero que tú recibas… (not reciba).
    • Es importante que usted deje… (formal “you”).
    • Necesitamos que nosotros respondamos
  • Word order: Subject is optional, but the verb form must show who:
    • Quiero que respondas… = “I want you to respond…” (tú is already in the verb).

Mini self-check before you choose a form

  1. Do I have a trigger + que?
  2. Who is the subject after que (tú/usted/nosotros/ustedes)?
  3. What is the yo form (dejo / respondo / recibo)?
  4. Does the verb end in -ar (use e) or -er/-ir (use a)?

1.
Incorrect: after “es importante que” the present subjunctive is used; “respondes” is indicative and is not correct here.
2.
Incorrect: “reciba” is subjunctive in the third person; with “quiero que” and referring to tú you must use “recibas”. It also mixes persons (reciba - llames), which sounds incoherent.
