Consecutive conjunctions: entonces, así (es) que, tal ... que

What are consecutive connectors?

• These words and structures introduce a result or consequence of a previous situation.
• In English they are similar to: then, so, therefore, as a result, such … that, so … that.
• Typical pattern: Previous situation + connector of consequence → consequence.

  → They didn’t talk about their problems, so the relationship ended.

How to choose: time, explanation, or result?

Ask yourself this quick question:

1. Is the focus on what happened next in time?
   → Use entonces.
2. Are you clarifying or reformulating the idea?
   → Use o sea que.
3. Are you giving a simple result / consequence?
   → Use así que / así es que.

  → He arrived late, then we sat down and ordered something. (sequence)

Tip: In spoken Spanish, o sea (que) is very common to comment and clarify: O sea, fue raro (So, it was weird).

Intensifying the consequence: tan… que, tanto/a(s)… que, tal… que

These structures say that something is so strong that it produces a clear result.

All three introduce a consequence with que.

Form correctly: where to put each word

• tan + adjective + que
  Sujeto + verbo + tan + adjetivo + que + consecuencia
  • Son tan compatibles que todos lo notan.
  • La cita fue tan incómoda que se marcharon pronto.

• tanto/a(s) + noun + que
  Sujeto + verbo + tanto/a(s) + sustantivo + que + consecuencia
  • Sintió tanta confianza que habló de su pasado sentimental.
  • Tenemos tantos amigos en común que siempre hablamos de alguien conocido.

• tal + noun + que
  tal + (adjetivo) + sustantivo + que + consecuencia
  • Fue tal conexión que empezaron una relación formal.
  • Hubo tal tensión que nadie disfrutó de la cena.

• 1. Forgetting que
  • Es tan simpático ø todos lo adoran.
  • Correct: Es tan simpático que todos lo adoran.
• 2. Mixing tan and tanto
  • Use tan with adjectives: tan alto, tan amable.
  • Use tanto/a(s) with nouns: tanto cariño, tantas discusiones.
  • Tiene tan amigos que nunca está solo.

• 3. Forgetting agreement of tanto/a(s)
