Verb periphrases with infinitive: Soler, Volver a, Deber de...

Perífrasis verbales de infinitivo: Soler, Volver a, Deber de....

Las perífrasis verbales sirven para expresar cómo se desarrolla una acción: si es habitual, empieza, se repite, se interrumpe, es obligatoria o probable.

(Verb periphrases are used to express how an action unfolds: whether it is habitual, begins, is repeated, is interrupted, is obligatory, or is probable.)

What these structures are (and why you need them)

These are verbal periphrases: a conjugated “helper” verb + an infinitive.

  • The helper adds meaning: habit, repetition, start, stopping, imminence, obligation, probability.
  • The infinitive is the main action (what actually happens).
Core pattern Meaning Example
Verbo conjugado + infinitivo The helper gives the “angle” Suelo controlar la presión.

Step 1: Choose the helper that matches your intention

Periphrasis Use when you mean… Quick English equivalent
soler + infinitivo a usual routine / habit usually / tend to
volver a + infinitivo doing something again to do again
dejar de + infinitivo stopping an activity to stop / to quit
ponerse a + infinitivo starting suddenly (focus on “the moment it begins”) to start / to get to
estar a punto de + infinitivo something is about to happen (imminent) to be about to
deber + infinitivo obligation / recommendation must / should
deber de + infinitivo probability / assumption (speaker’s guess) must be / probably

Step 2: Conjugate only the helper (the infinitive stays “neutral”)

Change the helper to fit time and person. The infinitive does not change.

Context Correct What to avoid
habit (now) Yo suelo controlar la presión. Yo suelo controlo la presión.
repetition (past) Ayer volví a tomar la temperatura. Ayer volví tomar la temperatura.
stopping (present perfect) He dejado de fumar. He dejado fumar.
imminent action (now) Estoy a punto de vacunarme. Estoy a punto que vacunarme.

The big “trap”: deber vs deber de

These two look similar but often communicate very different messages.

Form Meaning Natural example
deber + infinitivo obligation / advice Debes controlar el azúcar regularmente. (You should / must…)
deber de + infinitivo probability / assumption Debe de tener fiebre, porque no está aquí. (He must have…)
  • If you can add “probably” in English, you likely want deber de.
  • If it sounds like a rule, instruction, or responsibility, you likely want deber.

Pronouns (me/te/se/lo/la/los/las): where do they go?

With these periphrases you normally have two correct positions:

  • Before the conjugated helper
  • Attached to the infinitive
Meaning Option A Option B Wrong
do it again (to myself) Me volví a tomar la tensión. Volví a tomarme la tensión. Volví a me tomar la tensión.
about to do it (to myself) Me voy a hacer un análisis. (also common) Estoy a punto de hacerme un análisis. Estoy a punto de me hacer un análisis.

Quick self-check before you speak

  1. What do I mean? habit / again / stop / start / about to / obligation / probability
  2. Did I conjugate only the helper? (not the infinitive)
  3. Did I include the required preposition?
    • volver a (needs a)
    • dejar de (needs de)
    • estar a punto de (needs de)
    • deber de (needs de for probability)
  4. If there is a pronoun, is it placed correctly? before the helper or attached to the infinitive

What you should pay special attention to (B1 priority)

  • Don’t add “de” to soler: suelo de hacersuelo hacer.
  • Don’t conjugate the second verb: suelo controlosuelo controlar.
  • Use deber de for guesses, especially with evidence: Debe de estar enfermo.
  • Remember the fixed chunk: estar a punto de (never a punto que).
  1. Conjugated verb + infinitive.
  2. The conjugated verb indicates how the action unfolds or the speaker’s intention; the infinitive expresses the main action.
Auxiliary verbExample
SolerYo suelo controlar la presión antes de dormir. (I usually check my blood pressure before going to sleep.)
Volver aÉl volvió a tomar la temperatura después del ejercicio. (He took his temperature again after exercising.)
Dejar deElla dejó de hacer ejercicio por dolor en la rodilla. (She stopped exercising because of knee pain.)
Ponerse aEl paciente se puso a cuidar los músculos. (The patient started taking care of his muscles.)
Estar a punto deEstoy a punto de vacunarme contra la gripe. (I’m about to get vaccinated against the flu.)
DeberDebes controlar el azúcar regularmente. (You must check your blood sugar regularly.)
Deber deDebe de tener fiebre porque no está aquí. (He must have a fever because he isn’t here.)
