Relative and interrogative adverbs: donde, cuando, como

1. What is the difference: dónde/donde, cuándo/cuando, cómo/como?

• With accent (tilde) → they ask a question (direct or indirect).
• Without accent → they do not ask; they work like “where/when/how” in relative clauses.

Key idea: First ask: “Is there a question (direct or indirect)?” → If yes, you probably need the accent.

2. Direct questions: always with accent

In a direct question, the adverb always has a tilde:

• ¿Dónde está la fregona?
• ¿Cuándo viene el servicio de limpieza?
• ¿Cómo funciona este aspirador?

Even if the question is not at the start of the sentence, the accent stays:

• Disculpe, ¿dónde están las toallas limpias?

Self-check: Is there a ? in Spanish? → Use dónde, cuándo, cómo.

3. Indirect questions: still with accent

In indirect questions, there is no ?, but you are still asking something.

• No sé dónde está la fregona. (I don’t know where it is.)
• Quiero saber cuándo limpian la oficina. (I want to know when.)
• Explícame cómo funciona la máquina. (Explain to me how.)

Typical verbs that introduce indirect questions:

• saber: no sé, quiero saber…
• preguntar: le pregunté…
• explicar, decir, recordar…

Self-check question: If you can add “I don’t know / I want to know / Can you tell me” in English, you probably need the accent.

Example:

• I don’t know where they keep the products → No sé dónde guardan los productos.

4. Relative clauses: without accent

When the word does not ask anything, but introduces extra information, it normally has no tilde.

• El armario donde guardamos los productos está lleno.
  • (That cupboard where we keep the products…) → describes the cupboard, no question.
• El día cuando vinieron a limpiar, todo quedó perfecto.
  • (The day when they came to clean…) → describes the day.
• Hizo la cama como indicó el servicio de limpieza.
  • (He made the bed the way the cleaning service indicated.)

Trick: If you can replace it with “in which / on which / the way (that)” and there is no question, you probably need donde, cuando, como (no accent).

1. Rewrite mentally and then check:

   • No sé donde están las llaves del almacén.
   • → No sé dónde están las llaves del almacén.

2. Decide: accent or no accent?

   • El edificio donde trabajas es muy moderno.
   • ¿Cuándo limpian los pasillos de este piso?
   • Me gusta la forma como organizas el armario.
   • Quiero preguntarle cómo organiza el servicio de limpieza las reservas.

Self-check: For each sentence, ask: “Is someone asking ‘where/when/how’?” If yes → tilde. If not → no tilde.

8. What you should pay attention to from now on

• When you write donde/cuando/como, stop for a second and ask: “Question or description?”
• If it is a question (direct or indirect) → dónde, cuándo, cómo.
• If it just adds information (place, time, way) → donde, cuando, como.
• Look for verbs like saber, preguntar, no recordar, explicar; they often introduce indirect questions → accent.
• In your next emails or messages in Spanish, underline every donde/cuando/como and check you chose the form consciously.
