The key idea: accent = “question meaning”

In Spanish, these words change spelling depending on their function:

dónde / donde = place
cuándo / cuando = time
cómo / como = way / manner

With an accent (dónde, cuándo, cómo) they introduce a question (direct or indirect).

Without an accent (donde, cuando, como) they work as connectors (relative words): “where/when/as” in a statement.

Direct question vs. indirect question (both use the accent)

Indirect question	No ¿ ?, but it still contains the “unknown info”	No sé dónde está la fregona.

Tip: if in English you could add “…I wonder” or “…I don’t know” before it, Spanish usually keeps the accent.

Relative use: no question → no accent

Use donde / cuando / como when you are not asking anything. You are defining or describing:

place: El cuarto donde guardamos la escoba está al fondo.
time: Fue el día cuando revisaron todas las habitaciones.
manner: Hizo la cama como indicó la supervisora.

Quick check: if you can replace it with “the place/time/way that…”, it is usually without accent.

Common traps (and how to avoid them)

Trap 1: “No sé…” is not a statement about location/time/manner — it introduces an indirect question.

~~No sé donde está el robot aspirador.~~ → No sé dónde está el robot aspirador.
Trap 2: “where/when/how” in English is ambiguous. Spanish forces you to choose: question (accent) vs connector (no accent).

Recuerdo cuándo vino el técnico. (I remember when he came → “when?” = questioned info)

El día cuando vino el técnico, todo quedó resuelto. (the day when… → connector)
Trap 3: Not every “como” is “how”. Often it means “as / like”.

Hazlo como te dije. (= do it as I told you → no question)

¿Cómo lo hago? (= how do I do it? → question)

What you should pay attention to in real-life writing

Look for “question meaning”, not just question marks.
After verbs like no sé, recuerdo, dime, explícame, depende de → you often have an indirect question.
- Explícame cómo se programa el robot.
- Depende de cuándo termine el servicio.
If it clearly modifies a noun (el lugar / el día / la manera) → usually no accent.

In questions they take an accent mark ⇒ dónde, cuándo, cómo.
Without a question they do not take an accent mark ⇒ donde, cuando, como.

Exceptions!

In indirect questions, the adverbs keep the accent mark ⇒ No sé dónde está la fregona.
