Las oraciones temporales se usan para decir cuándo pasa algo: si pasa al mismo tiempo que otra cosa o hasta un momento.

(Time clauses are used to say when something happens: whether it happens at the same time as something else or up to a certain moment.)

1. What are these temporal clauses for?

  • They answer the question: “When?”
  • They connect two actions in time in one sentence.
  • You already know the basic meaning of the words:
    • al + infinitivo = at the moment of doing something
    • mientras + verbo = while something is in progress
    • cuando + verbo = when, at a specific moment
    • hasta que + verbo = until, up to a limit

The important part now is: how each one connects the two actions and when we use subjunctive.

2. al + infinitivo: “on doing / when I do”

Use al + infinitivo for the action that starts another action.

  • Structure: al + infinitivo → main action
    • Al entrar en casa, enciendo las luces. (= When I go in, I turn on the lights.)
    • Al decorar el salón, cambio los cojines.

Key idea: The subject is usually the same in both actions.

  • Al cocinar, escucho música. (I cook & I listen)

Form is always: al + infinitivo (no change for person):

Typical mistake to avoid:

  • Al entro en casa ❌ → Al entrar en casa ✅

3. mientras: two actions at the same time

Use mientras when two actions are in progress at the same time.

  • Structure 1: Action 1 mientras Action 2
    • Escucho un podcast mientras ordeno el salón.
  • Structure 2: Mientras Action 1, Action 2
    • Mientras cocino, mi pareja limpia la mesa.

Verb form: normal indicative (present, past, etc.), not infinitive.

  • Present: Mientras pinto, escucho música.
  • Past: Mientras pintaba, escuchaba música.

Typical mistake to avoid:

  • Mientras pintar, escucho música ❌ → Mientras pinto, escucho música ✅

4. cuando: specific moment (present, past or future)

cuando introduces a specific moment in time.

  • In general / habits / past: use indicative
    • Cuando llego a casa, abro las ventanas.
    • Cuando vivía solo, decoraba menos.
  • Future or not realized yet: use subjunctive
    • Cuando ilumine la habitación, cambiaré la cortina.
    • Te llamaré cuando termine de ordenar.

Visual rule for B1:

  • If the main verb is in a future idea (ir a + inf., future simple), and the action with cuando is still not done → use subjunctive after cuando.

5. hasta que: limit or end point

hasta que shows the limit of an action: “not before this moment”.

  • Present / past (real, known): use indicative
    • No cuelgo cuadros hasta que decido el estilo. (habit)
    • No colgué cuadros hasta que decidí el estilo. (past)
  • Future or not realized yet: usually subjunctive
    • No compraré sofás nuevos hasta que encuentre un buen precio.
    • No vamos a colgar las fotos hasta que pintemos la pared.

Shortcut rule with negation:

  • If you say no + verbo in the main clause and the limit is in the future → use subjunctive after hasta que.

6. Quick comparison: which connector should I use?

7. Step-by-step: how to build your sentence

  1. Identify the two actions.
    • Example: “I paint the living room. I change the curtains.”
  2. Decide the time relation.
    • At the start of another? → al + infinitivo
    • At the same time? → mientras
    • At a specific moment (when)? → cuando
    • Until a limit? → hasta que
  3. Check: is the action with cuando / hasta que already real or still future?
    • Real (habit / past) → indicative
    • Future / not done → usually subjunctive
  4. Put it together.
    • Cuando termine de pintar el salón, cambiaré las cortinas.

8. Self-check: can you do this now?

Read each point and check if you can give your own example.

  • I can make a sentence with al + infinitivo to show the start of an action.
