Temporal clauses: Mientras, Cuando, Hasta que...

Oraciones temporales: Mientras, Cuando, Hasta que...

Las oraciones temporales se usan para decir cuándo pasa algo: si pasa al mismo tiempo que otra cosa o hasta un momento.

(Temporal clauses are used to say when something happens: whether it happens at the same time as something else or until a certain moment.)

What these connectors do (one simple job)

They link two actions in time and tell you whether the actions happen:

  • at the same time (during / while)
  • right when something happens (when)
  • up to a limit (until)

Al + infinitivo = “when / upon doing …” (one subject)

Use Al + infinitive when the same person does both actions and one action is the “trigger/moment”.

Form Pattern Example
Al + infinitivo Al + decorar / terminar / llegar… Al decorar el salón, cambio los cojines.
  • Typical meaning: “When I decorate… / Upon decorating…”
  • Often used for routines: Al llegar a casa, apago el móvil.
  • Quick self-check: Can you rewrite it as Cuando + present without changing the meaning? If yes, Al + infinitivo is probably fine.

Watch out: if the subject changes, prefer cuando/mientras.

  • Al colgar mi pareja los cuadros, yo elegía la alfombra. (awkward)
  • Better: Mientras mi pareja colgaba los cuadros, yo elegía la alfombra.

Mientras = “while / whereas” (two actions overlap)

Mientras tells you two actions happen in parallel.

  • Same time, same person: Mientras trabajo, escucho música.
  • Same time, different people: Mientras mi pareja colgaba los cuadros, yo combinaba colores.

Time choice tip:

  • Present = habits/general: Mientras preparo informes, pongo música de fondo.
  • Past (imperfect) = background action in a story: Mientras revisaba el plano, sonó el teléfono.

Cuando + indicative = habits, facts, repeated situations

Use cuando + present (indicative) for what normally happens or general truths.

  • Cuando ilumino el espacio, el ambiente cambia.
  • Cuando llego tarde, aviso por mensaje.

Self-check: Are you describing a routine (“whenever I…”) or a known fact? → indicative.

When “cuando / hasta que” switch to the subjunctive (future or not done yet)

This is the key B1 point:

  • Cuando and hasta que use subjunctive when the action is in the future or still pending.
  • In English you still say “when”, but Spanish marks it with mood.
Meaning Spanish pattern Example
Habit / general Cuando + indicative Cuando termino una reunión, normalmente escribo un resumen.
Future / not done yet Cuando + subjunctive Cuando termine la reunión, te llamaré.
Not before… (pending limit) Hasta que + subjunctive Hasta que me den el presupuesto final, no encargaré las cortinas.

Very common mistake (tense agreement):

  • Cuando ilumine el salón, se ve más amplio.
  • Correct: Cuando ilumine el salón, se verá más amplio.

Mini decision guide (fast and practical)

  1. Same subject + “upon doing” → Al + infinitivo
  2. Two actions overlap → Mientras
  3. “When” + routine/fact → Cuando + indicative
  4. “When/Until” + future or not completed yet → Cuando / Hasta que + subjunctive

Self-check: do you really mean future or routine?

  • If you can add “tomorrow / next week / later”, you probably need subjunctive.
    • Cuando llegue el sofá (la semana que viene), reorganizaremos el salón.
  • If you can add “usually / whenever”, you probably need indicative.
    • Cuando llega el sofá, siempre reviso que no tenga daños.

Exceptions!

  1. Cuando and Hasta que + subjunctive ⇒ future or unrealized action (Cuando ilumine la habitación, cambiaré la cortina).

Incorrect: “cuando” + subjunctive indicates the future or an action not carried out; here there is a lack of tense agreement: it should be “Cuando ilumine el salón, se verá más amplio.” or use the present: “Cuando ilumino..., se ve...”.
2.
Incorrect: if it is a future or pending action, with “hasta que” it is more natural to use the subjunctive (“termine”); using the present (“termino”) can convey a tense agreement error in this context.
