What is the pretérito pluscuamperfecto?

• In English, this is the past perfect: “had done”, “had asked”, “had decided”.
• In Spanish, it is used to talk about an action that was already finished before another past action.

Focus question: When you use the pluscuamperfecto, you always answer: “What had already happened (or not) at that moment in the past?”

How to form it (step by step)

The structure is always the same:

haber (imperfect) + past participle

Important: only haber changes. The participle does not change.

• -ar verbs → participle in -ado: solicitar → solicitado
• -er / -ir verbs → participle in -ido: conceder → concedido; pedir → pedido

When do we use the pluscuamperfecto?

Use it when you have two past actions and one happens before the other.

1. The earlier action → pluscuamperfecto (had done).
2. The later action → normally pretérito indefinido.

Example 1:

• Cuando llegué a la oficina, todavía no había solicitado las vacaciones.

→ First: not requesting the vacation (had not requested).
→ Then: arriving at the office.

Example 2:

• Cuando el jefe revisó mi expediente, ya había concedido el aumento.
