Usamos dos pronombres átonos juntos cuando en la frase hay una persona y una cosa.

(We use two unstressed pronouns together when in the sentence there is a person and a thing.)

1. What are these double pronouns?

  • We often have a person (indirect object) and a thing (direct object) in the same sentence.
  • Instead of repeating both, Spanish usually replaces them with two short pronouns in a fixed order.

Example

  • El médico explica la dieta a mí. → Me la explica.
  • El médico explica la dieta a nosotros. → Nos la explica.

You already know the forms. The key now is: Which pronoun is which? In what order? Where do they go?

2. Step 1 – Find “thing” and “person” quickly

Ask yourself two short questions for any sentence:

  1. Direct object (thing): What is explained / bought / sent?
    → Answers to ¿qué?
  2. Indirect object (person): To whom? For whom?
    → Answers to ¿a quién? / ¿para quién?

Example

  • El médico explica la dieta a .
¿Qué explica? la dieta → cosala
    ¿A quién? a mí → personame

Combined: Me la explica.

3. Step 2 – Choose the correct pronouns

Indirect object (person)

yome
te
él / ella / ustedle (→ se if combined, see below)
nosotros/asnos
vosotros/asos
ellos / ellas / ustedesles (→ se if combined, see below)

Direct object (thing)

masculine, singularlo
feminine, singularla
masculine, plurallos
feminine, plurallas

Mini check

  • ¿A tu hermana? → le
  • ¿Las fotos? → las
  • ¿A tus compañeros? → les
  • ¿El informe? → lo

4. Step 3 – Fixed order: person first, thing second

When you combine them, the order is always:

  • Indirect (person) + Direct (thing)

Never change this order.

CorrectMe la explica.
IncorrectLa me explica.
CorrectTe lo envío.
IncorrectLo te envío.

Think: to whom? first, what? second.

5. Step 4 – Where do the pronouns go?

Two main patterns you need at B1:

  1. With a conjugated verb (normal present, past, future, etc.)
→ Pronouns go before the verb.
    • El doctor explica el tratamiento a ti. → Te lo explica.
    • El nutricionista recomendó esta dieta a nosotros. → Nos la recomendó.
  2. With an infinitive (voy a, puede, quiere, etc.)
→ Pronouns go attached to the infinitive.
    • Va a explicar la dieta a mí. → Va a explicármela.
    • ¿Puedes mostrar las fotos a tu hermana? → ¿Puedes mostrárselas?

In more advanced Spanish, you can also put them before the conjugated verb (e.g. "Me la va a explicar"). For now, focus on the patterns in your book.

6. Special case: le/les → se

This is the rule that usually causes doubt.

  • When le or les (to him / her / them) appear together with lo / la / los / las, le / les change to se.
OriginalEl doctor explica los resultados a ellos.
Identifya ellos → les; los resultados → los
Ruleles + los → se los
ResultEl doctor se los explica.

More examples:

  • Voy a enviar el informe a mi jefa. → Voy a enviárselo.
(a mi jefa → le → se; el informe → lo)
  • ¿Puedes mostrar las fotos a tu hermana? → ¿Puedes mostrárselas?
(a tu hermana → le → se; las fotos → las)

Important: The change to se happens only to avoid the sound le lo, le la, les lo…

The meaning is still “to him / to her / to them”. Context tells you who se refers to.

7. Accent marks when attaching pronouns

When you attach pronouns to an infinitive, the stress of the word changes. Spanish keeps the original stress with an accent mark.

  • explicar → ex-pli-CAR
  • explicar + me + la → explicarMEla → explicármela

You do not need to calculate this every time now. At B1, focus on:

  • Pronouns attached to the infinitive: explicármela, enviárselo, preparártelo, mostrárselas
  • Accept that the accent appears to keep the normal stress.

8. Step-by-step method for any sentence

  1. Find the verb.
    What action is happening?
  2. Find the thing (direct object).
    Ask: ¿qué? → choose lo / la / los / las.
  3. Find the person (indirect object).
Ask: ¿a quién? / ¿para quién? → choose me, te, le, nos, os, les.
  4. Check: le/les + lo/la/los/las?
Yes → change le / les → se.
  5. Put them together: person + thing.
Indirect + Direct (e.g. me la, te lo, se los).
  6. Place them:
    • Conjugated verb → before the verb.
    • Infinitive → attached at the end.

Example walkthrough

  • La entrenadora va a preparar un plan de entrenamiento para ti.
  • Verb: va a preparar.
  • Thing: un plan de entrenamiento → lo.
  • Person: para ti → te.
  • te + lo → te lo.
  • Infinitive: preparar → attach → preparártelo.
  • Final: La entrenadora va a preparártelo.

9. Typical mistakes to avoid

  • Wrong order
Lo te explico. → Te lo explico.
  • Forgetting se
Le lo explico. → Se lo explico.
  • Keeping the noun when using both pronouns
Se lo explico a mi jefe el informe.
Better: Se lo explico a mi jefe. (report already included in "lo")
  • Using stressed forms instead of clitics
Explica la dieta a mí → Explica la dieta a yoMe explica la dieta. / Me la explica.

10. Quick self-check: Do I really understand?

Try to answer these mentally. If you can, you are ready for conversation practice.

  1. What always comes first in the combination: person or thing?
  2. When do you change le/les to se?
  3. Where do pronouns go with a conjugated verb? And with an infinitive?
  4. Transform in your head:
    a) El médico explica la dieta a ti. → ____________
    b) Voy a enviar el informe a mis colegas. → ____________
    c) ¿Puedes mostrar las fotos a tu hermana? → ____________

Possible answers

  • a) Te la explica.
  • b) Voy a enviárselo.
  • c) ¿Puedes mostrárselas?

If this feels clear, you can now focus your class time on speaking and using these forms in real conversations.

  1. The fixed order is: person (indirect object) + thing (direct object).
  2. Thing → answers ¿qué?; Person → answers ¿a quién? / ¿para quién?
  3. Person ⭢ me, te, le, nos, os, les; Thing ⭢ lo, la, los, las
Situación (Situation)Frase original (Original sentence)Frase con pronombres (Sentence with pronouns)
Persona + Cosa (Person + Thing)El médico explica la dieta a mí. Me la explica.
Con el infinitivo, los dos pronombres van al final del verbo (With the infinitive, both pronouns go at the end of the verb)Va a explicar la dieta a mí.Va a explicármela.
Con el verbo conjugado, los dos pronombres van antes del verbo (With the conjugated verb, both pronouns go before the verb)Explica el régimen a ti.Te lo explica.

Exceptions!

  1. When both pronouns are in the third person, the indirect pronoun changes to se, both in the singular and in the plural ( explícalela ⭢ explícasela).
  2. With entre, hasta, según tonic pronouns are used (según tú and not según ti).
