Combination of unstressed pronouns: se lo pide, nos lo dice, te las enseña...

Combinación de los pronombres átonos: se lo pide, nos lo dice, te las enseña...

Usamos dos pronombres átonos juntos cuando en la frase hay una persona y una cosa.

(We use two unstressed object pronouns together when there is a person and a thing in the sentence.)

What this grammar is doing (in one glance)

When a verb has two objects, Spanish often replaces them with two short (unstressed) pronouns.

  • Person = indirect object (IO) → answers to/for whom? (¿a quién? / ¿para quién?)
  • Thing = direct object (DO) → answers what? (¿qué?)

The key habit: Person + Thing (fixed order).

Step 1: Identify “thing” (DO) vs “person” (IO)

  1. Find the thing (DO): what is explained/sent/shown?
  2. Find the person (IO): to whom/for whom?
Full sentence Thing (DO) Person (IO)
El me9dico explica la dieta a med. la dieta a med
bfPuedes mostrar las fotos a tu hermana? las fotos a tu hermana

Step 2: Choose the correct pronouns

Person (IO)

  • a med d7 a med d7 a med → me
  • a ti → te
  • a e9l / a ella / a usted → le
  • a nosotros/as → nos
  • a vosotros/as → os
  • a ellos/as / a ustedes → les

Thing (DO) (match gender + number)

  • el informe → lo | la dieta → la
  • los resultados → los | las fotos → las

Step 3: Put them in the right order (always the same)

Fixed order: IO (person) + DO (thing)

Correct Why
Me la explica. person (me) + thing (la)
Te lo explica. person (te) + thing (lo)
La me explica. wrong order

Step 4: Place them: before a conjugated verb OR attached to an infinitive

  • Conjugated verb → pronouns go before the verb.

Te lo explica. / Nos las recomienda.

  • Infinitive (e.g., with ir a, poder, querer) → you have two options:
Option A (before the conjugated verb) Option B (attached to the infinitive)
Me la va a explicar. Va a explice1rmela.
bfSe las puedes mostrar? bfPuedes mostre1rselas?

Avoid: Va a me la explicar (you cannot split va a from the infinitive like that).

The “se” change (the one rule you must not miss)

If both pronouns are 3rd person (le/les + lo/la/los/las), Spanish changes le/les to se.

Not allowed Correct
Le lo explica. Se lo explica.
Les las mando. Se las mando.

Meaning stays the same: “to him/her/them/you (formal)”. Se here is only a sound/grammar change.

Accent tip when you attach pronouns

When pronouns are attached to the infinitive, Spanish often adds an accent to keep the original stress.

  • explicar + me + la → explice1rmela
  • enviar + se + lo → envie1rselo
  • mostrar + se + las → mostre1rselas

Don’t try to “calculate” the accent at B1: copy the written form and you will internalize the pattern.

Quick self-check (before you submit an answer)

  1. Did I replace person with me/te/le/nos/os/les?
  2. Did I replace thing with lo/la/los/las (correct gender/number)?
  3. Did I keep the order person + thing?
  4. If it’s le/les + lo/la/los/las, did I change it to se + lo/la/los/las?
  5. Is placement correct: before the conjugated verb OR attached to the infinitive?

Small exception: “segfan” uses a subject pronoun

After segfan (also entre, hasta in this specific point), Spanish uses the subject form:

  • segfan tfa (not segfan ti)
  1. The fixed order is: person (indirect object) + thing (direct object).
  2. Thing → answers ¿qué?; Person → answers ¿a quién? / ¿para quién?
  3. Person ⭢ me, te, le, nos, os, les; Thing ⭢ lo, la, los, las
SituaciónFrase originalFrase con pronombres
Persona + Cosa (Person + Thing)El médico explica la dieta a mí.  (The doctor explains the diet to me.)Me la explica. (He/She explains it to me.)
Con el infinitivo, pronombres al final del verbo (With the infinitive, pronouns at the end of the verb)Va a explicar la dieta a mí. (He/She is going to explain the diet to me.)Va a explicármela. (He/She is going to explain it to me.)
Con el verbo conjugado, pronombres antes del verbo (With the conjugated verb, pronouns before the verb)Explica el régimen a ti. (He/She explains the diet plan to you.)Te lo explica. (He/She explains it to you.)

Exceptions!

  1. When both pronouns are third person, the indirect pronoun changes to se, in both singular and plural ( explícalela ⭢ explícasela).
  2. With entre, hasta, según we use stressed pronouns (según tú and not según ti).
