Muchas expresiones usan indicativo para expresar hechos y el subjuntivo para expresar posibilidades.

(Many expressions use the indicative to express facts and the subjunctive to express possibilities.)

1. What are these expressions used for?

These expressions help you say how sure or how unsure you are about something.

  • Seguramente, probablemente, posiblemente
  • Quizás, tal vez
  • Es posible que, es probable que

The key question is always:

Do I feel more “sure” (certainty) or more “unsure / evaluative” (doubt, personal view)?

2. The core rule in one view

If you feel… Use… Example
More sure Indicative Seguramente está cansado.
(You are quite sure.)
More unsure, more distance or evaluation Subjunctive Seguramente esté cansado.
(You show more doubt / speculation.)

And two fixed rules:

  • Es posible que / Es probable quealways subjunctive.
  • The expression itself does not decide the mood. Your attitude (more sure vs. more doubtful) does.

3. Seguramente / Probablemente / Posiblemente

These three are very similar in use.

  • + indicative → you see it as quite likely, almost a fact.
  • + subjunctive → you keep more distance, it is more hypothetical.
Form Meaning Example
Seguramente + indicativo High probability, almost sure. Seguramente está en una reunión.
(You are pretty convinced.)
Seguramente + subjuntivo More doubt or speculation. Seguramente esté en una reunión.
(You are not so sure, you are guessing.)
Probablemente / Posiblemente + indicativo Likely, but still your best guess. Probablemente llega tarde.
Posiblemente tienen una urgencia.
Probablemente / Posiblemente + subjuntivo Even more distance, more “maybe, who knows”. Probablemente lleguen tarde.
Posiblemente tengan una urgencia.

In real conversations, many speakers often use the indicative after these, because we normally talk about what we think is likely. The subjunctive is still correct, but feels more cautious or speculative.

4. Quizás / Tal vez: both possible, what changes?

Quizás and tal vez can go with indicative or subjunctive.

  • With indicative → the speaker feels the situation is quite real / concrete.
  • With subjunctive → the speaker keeps more distance or sees it as more hypothetical.
Form Feeling Example
Quizás + indicativo You see it as fairly real. Quizás hay un problema en el proyecto.
(You think this is probably true.)
Quizás + subjuntivo You show more doubt. Quizás haya un problema en el proyecto.
(You are less sure, more speculative.)
Tal vez + indicativo Similar idea: rather probable. Tal vez tienen un problema de organización.
Tal vez + subjuntivo More distance / hypothesis. Tal vez tengan un problema de organización.

Again, in everyday speech, you will hear a lot of indicative. The subjunctive appears especially when you want to sound more careful, polite or clearly show that it is just a hypothesis.

5. Es posible que / Es probable que: fixed subjunctive

Here the rule is simpler.

  • Es posible que + subjuntivo
  • Es probable que + subjuntivo
Correct Incorrect Meaning
Es posible que el proyecto termine este mes. Es posible que el proyecto termina este mes. It is possible the project will finish this month.
Es probable que necesitemos más recursos. Es probable que necesitamos más recursos. It is probable that we need more resources.

Think of the structure as fixed:

  • Es posible / Es probable + que + subjunctive.

6. Helpful comparison with English

English does not change the verb form after these expressions, but the meaning is similar.

Spanish English idea
Seguramente está enfermo. He is probably ill. (quite sure)
Seguramente esté enfermo. He is probably / might be ill. (more distance)
Quizás hay un problema. There is maybe / perhaps a problem. (quite concrete)
Quizás haya un problema. There might be / may be a problem. (more hypothetical)
Es posible que lleguemos tarde. It is possible that we will arrive late.

Use this to feel the difference, but remember: only Spanish uses indicative vs. subjunctive here.

7. Typical doubts and how to solve them

  • “Is there a meaning difference or is it just style?”
    • There is usually a small but real difference: more certainty (indicative) vs. more doubt / hypothesis (subjunctive).
    • However, in many everyday contexts, both are possible and acceptable. Native speakers often decide by feeling, not by rule.
  • “Should I always use the subjunctive after these expressions?”
    • No. After seguramente / probablemente / posiblemente / quizás / tal vez you choose.
    • Only es posible que / es probable que always require the subjunctive.
  • “What do native speakers use more?”
    • With seguramente, probablemente, posiblemente, you will hear the indicative very often.
    • With quizás / tal vez, both moods are common; context and personal style decide.

8. Step-by-step: how to decide quickly

  1. Identify the expression
seguramente, probablemente, posiblemente, quizás, tal vez, es posible que, es probable que…
  2. Ask yourself: “Do I feel this is quite true or really uncertain?”
    • If it feels close to a fact → choose indicative.
    • If it feels more like a hypothesis / polite speculation → choose subjunctive.
  3. Remember the fixed pair
If you have es posible que / es probable quealways subjunctive.
  4. Form the verb correctly in the chosen mood.

9. Mini self-check

Cover the answers first, then check.

  1. 1) You think your colleague is almost certainly stressed. What sounds better in Spanish for you?

    • Seguramente está estresado.
    • Seguramente esté estresado.

Tip: “Almost certainly” → you probably prefer indicative.

  2. 2) You want to sound careful and not assume too much. Which option matches that attitude better?

    • Tal vez tienen un problema con el nuevo programa.
    • Tal vez tengan un problema con el nuevo programa.

Tip: More careful, more hypothetical → subjunctive.

  3. 3) Correct the verb:

Es probable que el jefe está enfadado.

Correct: Es probable que el jefe esté enfadado.

If you can explain to yourself why each answer uses indicative or subjunctive, you have understood the core of this topic.

  1. Seguramente / Probablemente / Posiblemente / Quizás / Tal vez + indicative → the speaker expresses certainty.
  2. Seguramente / Probablemente / Posiblemente / Quizás / Tal vez + subjunctive → the speaker expresses doubt or evaluation.
  3. Es posible que / Es probable que → always subjunctive.
