Indicative or Subjunctive?

¿Indicativo o Subjuntivo?

Muchas expresiones usan indicativo para expresar hechos y el subjuntivo para expresar posibilidades.

(Many expressions use the indicative to express facts and the subjunctive to express possibilities.)

What these expressions do

These words introduce a degree of certainty. In Spanish, that choice often affects the mood of the verb:

  • Indicative = you treat it as a likely fact (you’re fairly sure).
  • Subjunctive = you present it as a possibility / assessment (you’re not committing).

The key decision: fact vs. possibility

Ask yourself one quick question:

  • Am I reporting what I think is true? → use indicative.
  • Am I hedging / evaluating / leaving it open? → use subjunctive.
Your intention Typical mood Spanish example
High confidence (sounds like a conclusion) Indicative Seguramente está en una reunión.
Open possibility (careful, non-committal) Subjunctive Probablemente esté en una reunión.

How to use: seguramente / probablemente / posiblemente

These are flexible: they can go with indicative or subjunctive.

  • Indicative when you’re pretty sure:
    Seguramente se siente valorado.
  • Subjunctive when you’re being cautious or making a judgment:
Probablemente esté satisfecho, aunque quedan dudas.

Professional tip: In meetings/emails, the subjunctive often sounds more diplomatic (you avoid stating assumptions as facts).

How to use: quizás / tal vez

Quizás and tal vez behave the same way: indicative or subjunctive, depending on your certainty.

  • More “I think it’s true” → indicative:
Quizás hay un problema en el proyecto.
  • More “it may be the case” → subjunctive:
Tal vez haya una falta de comunicación.

Meaning stays similar; what changes is your level of commitment.

Always subjunctive: es posible que / es probable que

These have que + a new clause, so Spanish marks it as uncertainty: always subjunctive.

  • Es posible que + subjuntivo: Es posible que estés desbordado.
  • Es probable que + subjuntivo: Es probable que necesite tomar un descanso.

Common mistake:

  • Es probable que necesita descansar.
  • Es probable que necesite descansar. ✅

Mini self-check (fast and practical)

  1. Is there “que”?
    • If you see es posible que / es probable quesubjunctive (no choice).
  2. No “que”?
    • With seguramente / probablemente / posiblemente / quizás / tal vez choose the mood based on your intention.
  3. Read it aloud:
    • If it sounds like a firm conclusion → indicative.
    • If it sounds like a cautious hypothesis → subjunctive.

Useful pairs to remember (same idea, different certainty)

More certain (Indicative) More cautious (Subjunctive)
Probablemente tiene razón. Probablemente tenga razón.
Quizás hay un malentendido. Quizás haya un malentendido.
Tal vez llega hoy. Tal vez llegue hoy.

Takeaway: Spanish uses mood to show how strongly you stand behind your statement.

  1. Seguramente / Probablemente / Posiblemente / Quizás / Tal vez + indicative → the speaker expresses certainty.
  2. Seguramente / Probablemente / Posiblemente / Quizás / Tal vez + subjunctive → the speaker expresses doubt, evaluation.
  3. Es posible que / Es probable que → always subjunctive.

1.
Although «probablemente» can be used with the subjunctive to express doubt or an assessment, in this professional context we are talking about a likely fact; the correct option uses the indicative.
2.
«Es probable que» cannot be used with the indicative; using «reconoce/recocíbe» would be incorrect here — it needs the subjunctive («reconozca»).
