1. What is reported speech (estilo indirecto)?

In Spanish, you often have two options:

• Direct speech: you repeat the exact words with « » and question marks.
• Reported / indirect speech: you explain what someone said, without repeating every word.

Example:

• Direct: «Tengo experiencia en ventas».
• Indirect: Dice que tiene experiencia en ventas.

In indirect speech you usually need:

• a speech verb (verbo de habla): decir, afirmar, explicar, preguntar…
• a connector: que or si, or a question word (qué, por qué…)
• sometimes a change in the verb tense in the second part of the sentence.

2. Step 1 – Choose the right speech verb

Use different verbs to show how something was said:

• Is the original sentence a statement? → decir, afirmar, explicar.
• Is the original sentence a question? → preguntar.

3. Step 2 – Choose the right connector: que or si

After the speech verb, you need a connector:

• Statements → use que
• Yes / no questions → use si
• Wh- questions (qué, por qué, cuándo, dónde…) → keep the question word, without question marks.

Examples:

• «Busco trabajo en el sector turístico». → Dice que busca trabajo en el sector turístico.
• «¿Tienes disponibilidad inmediata?» → Preguntó si tenía disponibilidad inmediata.
• «¿Por qué quieres cambiar de trabajo?» → Preguntó por qué quería cambiar de trabajo.

Important: in Spanish you do not say dijo de que. Only:

• Él dijo que…

4. Step 3 – Do I need to change the tense?

Look at the speech verb (decir, afirmar, explicar, preguntar).

• If the speech verb is in the present → usually no tense change.
• If the speech verb is in the past (dijo, afirmó, explicó, preguntó) → the tense in the reported part normally moves one step back.

5. No tense change: speech verb in the present

When the reporting verb is in the present (dice, afirma, explica, pregunta), keep the original tense.

• Speech verb: dice / afirma / explica / pregunta → OK, keep the tense.

6. Tense changes: speech verb in the past

When the speech verb is in the past, Spanish usually moves the tense of the original sentence one step back.

*At B1 level, it is safe to use the pluscuamperfecto when the action happened before the speech verb.

More examples from a job context:

• «No tengo experiencia internacional». → El candidato afirmó que no tenía experiencia internacional.
• «He leído tu currículum con atención». → La reclutadora explicó que había leído su currículum con atención.
• «¿Puedes empezar el lunes?» → El jefe preguntó si podía empezar el lunes.

7. Changing the subject and pronouns

In reported speech you usually need to change the person (yo, tú, mi, tu…).

Think: “From whose perspective am I speaking now?”

• Direct: Marta: «He actualizado mi currículum».
• Indirect: Marta explicó que había actualizado su currículum.

• Direct: El jefe: «¿Puedes empezar el lunes?» (to you).
• Indirect: El jefe preguntó si podías empezar el lunes.

Another example:

• Direct: «Voy a enviar mi carta de presentación hoy».
• Indirect: Dijo que iba a enviar su carta de presentación ese día.

• Does yo, tú, mi, tu still make sense, or should it be él, ella, su?

8. Indirect questions: typical patterns

For questions, pay attention to three things:

1. No question marks (no «¿ ?»).
2. No inversion of subject and verb.
3. Use si or the question word (qué, cuándo, por qué…).

• Did you avoid patterns like preguntó si tenía? with question marks? (Wrong.)
• Is the word order normal: preguntó si + sujeto + verbo?

9. Typical mistakes to avoid

• Using “de que” after decir
  Dijo de que mi perfil era bueno.
  → Correct: Dijo que mi perfil era bueno.
• Keeping question marks in indirect questions
  Preguntó si ¿tenías disponibilidad?
  → Correct: Preguntó si tenías disponibilidad.
• Forgetting the tense change after a past reporting verb
  Afirmó que su perfil es muy completo. (with afirmó in past)
  → Correct: Afirmó que su perfil era muy completo.
• Not changing the person (yo → él/ella)
  Direct: «No tengo experiencia internacional».
  El candidato afirmó que no tengo experiencia internacional.
  → Correct: El candidato afirmó que no tenía experiencia internacional.

10. Quick 4-step method you can use every time

1. Identify the type of sentence:
   • Statement → que
   • Yes / no question → si
   • Wh-question → repeat question word (qué, cuándo…)
2. Choose the speech verb:
   • Neutral: decir
   • Formal / sure: afirmar
   • Explaining: explicar
   • Question: preguntar
3. Check the tense of the speech verb:
   • Present (dice, pregunta) → usually no tense change.
   • Past (dijo, afirmó, explicó, preguntó) → move the tense one step back.
4. Adapt pronouns and possessives:
   • yo → él / ella    mi → su    tú → él / ella (or the name).

If you follow these four steps slowly at first, the structure of reported speech in Spanish will become automatic and easier to use in conversation.
