What “estilo indirecto” does (in interviews and professional contexts)

Direct speech repeats the exact words: «Tengo experiencia…»

Indirect speech reports the message, not the exact sentence: Dice que tiene experiencia…

You usually start with a reporting verb: decir, afirmar, explicar, preguntar…
Then you add que (statements) or si (yes/no questions).

Choose the right connector: que vs si

Tense changes: when the reporting verb is in the past

If the reporting verb is in the past (e.g., dijo, afirmó, explicó, preguntó), Spanish usually “moves the time one step back”.

When NOT to backshift (the practical rule)

If the reporting verb is in the present: dice que… / pregunta si… → you normally keep the same tense.
Example: Laura dice que busca un puesto en RR. HH.
If the reporting verb is in pretérito perfecto (ha dicho / ha preguntado), you may keep the present if it’s still true now.
Example: En la entrevista ha preguntado si tengo disponibilidad inmediata. (Still relevant.)

For this level, if you’re unsure: after a clear past reporting verb (dijo/preguntó/afirmó/explicó), apply backshift.

Indirect questions: the word order you should copy

No question marks in indirect questions: ✅ Preguntó si tenía…
No inversion like in English.

Direct: «¿Cuándo puedes empezar?»

Indirect: Preguntó cuándo podía empezar.

Mini self-check before you write (3 steps)

Is it a statement or a question? → que (statement) / si (yes/no) / question word.
Is the reporting verb in the past? → backshift the tense (es→era, tengo→tenía, he hecho→había hecho…).
Is it a question? → no ¿? and keep normal Spanish word order.

What to pay attention to (typical interview phrases)

Disponibilidad: «Tengo disponibilidad inmediata» → Dijo que tenía disponibilidad inmediata.
Experiencia: «Tengo experiencia en…» → Dijo que tenía experiencia en…
Actualizaciones recientes: «He actualizado el currículum» → Explicó que había actualizado el currículum.
