In Deutschland ist Trinkgeld nur dann steuerfrei, wenn es der Gast direkt dem Arbeitnehmer gibt, während Trinkgeld an den Chef als steuerpflichtiges Einkommen gilt.
In Germany, tips are only tax-free if given directly by the guest to the employee, whereas tips given to the boss are considered taxable income.

Gebe ich dem Chef Trinkgeld, muss er aber Steuern zahlen. (If I give a tip to the boss, however, he has to pay taxes.)
Warum ist das so? (Why is that?)
Wenn der Gast das Trinkgeld direkt an den Kellner oder Koch gibt, ist es steuerfrei. (If the guest gives the tip directly to the waiter or the cook, it is tax-free.)
Das gilt auch für den Barmann. (This also applies to the bartender.)
Wenn aber der Gastronom oder Chef das Trinkgeld bekommt, ist es Einkommen und muss versteuert werden. (But if the restaurateur or the boss receives the tip, it counts as income and must be taxed.)
Aber Achtung: Wenn ein Familienmitglied ohne Bezahlung in deinem Restaurant arbeitet, muss sein Trinkgeld auch versteuert werden. (Note: If a family member works in your restaurant without pay, their tips must also be taxed.)

Exercise 2: Dialogue

Instruction: Read the dialogue and answer the questions.

Guido und Petra sind Abendessen und alles war hervorragend. Sie wollen dementsprechend Trinkgeld geben und besprechen welche Methode an sinnvollsten ist.

Guido and Petra have had dinner and everything was excellent. They want to give a tip accordingly and discuss which method is the most sensible.
1. Guido: Sollen wir schon nach der Rechnung fragen? (Shall we ask for the bill now?)
2. Petra: Ja, ich sehe den Kellner. Entschuldigung, können wir bitte zahlen? (Yes, I see the waiter. Excuse me, could we please pay?)
3. Guido: Ich mag dieses Restaurant sehr. Der Service ist immer gut. (I really like this restaurant. The service is always good.)
4. Petra: Du hast Recht. Der Kellner passt gut auf. Wie war dein Essen? (You’re right. The waiter is attentive. How was your meal?)
5. Guido: Mein Essen war sehr gut. Wir sollten 15 Prozent Trinkgeld geben. (My meal was very good. We should leave a 15 percent tip.)
6. Petra: Ja, auch der Wein und das Dessert waren lecker. Ich finde, wir geben 20 Prozent. (Yes, the wine and dessert were delicious too. I think we should leave 20 percent.)
7. Guido: Das stimmt. Ich bezahle mit Karte und gebe das Trinkgeld bar dazu. (That’s true. I’ll pay by card and give the tip in cash.)
8. Petra: Warum? Wenn du mit Karte bezahlst, kannst du das Trinkgeld auch dazugeben. (Why? If you pay by card, you can add the tip to it as well.)
9. Guido: Ja, ich weiß. Aber ich habe Angst, dass der Kellner das Trinkgeld nicht bekommt, sondern nur der Chef. (Yes, I know. But I’m worried the waiter won’t get the tip, only the manager.)
