In Germany, it is not normal to talk a lot about money. Salary is often private. Julia has to estimate in this video how much people earn in different professions.

Exercise 1: Word bingo

Exercise 2: Dialogue

Instruction: 1. Read the dialogue in pairs. 2. Memorize the phrases by covering the translation. 3. Cover one speaker’s lines, give alternative answers with your teacher, and write them down.

Nachdem sich Maurice und Clara im Bus kennenlernen, reden sie darüber, was sie arbeiten.

After Maurice and Clara meet on the bus, they talk about what they do for work.
1. Maurice: Sind Sie Ärztin? (Are you a doctor?)
2. Frieda: Nein, ich bin Ingenieurin. Warum glauben Sie, dass ich Ärztin bin? (No, I am an engineer. Why do you think I am a doctor?)
3. Maurice: Ihr Outfit. Das sieht fast aus wie ein Arztkittel. (Your outfit. It almost looks like a lab doctor´s coat)
4. Frieda: Was machen Sie beruflich? (What do you do for a living?)
5. Maurice: Ich bin noch Student, aber bald hoffentlich Lehrer. (I am still a student, but soon hopefully a teacher.)
6. Frieda: Das ist ein schöner Beruf. Sie machen alles richtig. (That is a great profession. You are doing everything right.)
7. Maurice: Für welche Firma arbeiten Sie? (What company do you work for?)
8. Frieda: Ich bin selbstständig. (I am self-employed.)
9. Maurice: Und wie viel verdient eine selbstständige Ingenieurin? (And how much does a self-employed engineer earn?)
10. Frieda: Das ist unterschiedlich. Es hängt vom Monat ab. (That varies. It depends on the month.)
