Adverbs of manner

Gli avverbi di modo

Gli avverbi di modo descrivono il modo o lo stile in cui qualcosa accade.

(Adverbs of manner describe the way or style in which something happens.)

What these words do (adverbs of manner)

Bene, male, piano, forte are adverbs of manner: they say how an action happens.

  • bene = well
  • male = badly / not well
  • piano = softly / quietly / slowly (depending on context)
  • forte = loudly / strongly

Where to put them in the sentence (A1 rule)

  • Most often, put the adverb after the verb.
Pattern Example
Verb + adverb Dormo bene.
Imperative + adverb Parla piano!
Verb + più + adverb Parla più forte, per favore.

Common confusion: “bene” vs “buono” (and “male” vs “cattivo”)

  • bene is an adverb → describes an action.
  • buono is an adjective → describes a thing/person.
Correct Why
Lavori bene. “Work” is an action → adverb
È un buon medico. “Doctor” is a person → adjective
Mi sento male. Fixed, very common expression
Mi sento cattivo. cattivo usually means “mean/bad (as a person)”

“Mi sento male” and other high-frequency chunks

In health/work contexts, these combinations are extremely common. Learn them as ready-made blocks.

  • Mi sento male. = I feel unwell.
  • Sto bene / Sto male. = I’m well / I’m unwell.
  • Dormi bene? = Do you sleep well?
  • Parli più forte? = Can you speak louder?

“Piano” has two natural meanings

  • piano = quietly/softly (volume) → Parla piano.
  • piano = slowly (speed) → Respira piano.

Self-check: ask yourself volume or speed?

“Forte” can mean “loud” or “strong”

  • forte = loudly (sound) → Parla forte.
  • forte = strongly (intensity) → Senti forte il dolore?

Tip: with pain/symptoms, forte often means intense.

Quick accuracy check (before you speak)

  1. What am I describing?
    • an action → use bene/male/piano/forte
    • a noun (person/thing) → you probably need an adjective (e.g., buono)
  2. Where do I place it? Put it after the verb: parlo piano.
  3. Does “piano/forte” mean volume or intensity/speed? Choose the meaning that fits the situation.
  1. Adverbs of manner are words that describe how an action is performed.
