4. neanche vs. nemmeno: adding another negative

Both words are very similar.

• Meaning:
  • neanche ≈ “not … either / neither”
  • nemmeno ≈ “not even / not … either” (slightly stronger or more emphatic)
• In many A1 contexts, you can treat them as almost interchangeable.

4.1 Where do they go?

Two main positions.

1. After a first negative clause, to add a second negative element.

• Note: the first part is negative with non. The second part “inherits” the negation with neanche/nemmeno.

2. At the beginning of the second clause, before the subject, to emphasize “not even …”.

Typical mistake:

• Non posso venire, non lui può. ✓ Non posso venire, neanche lui può.

Self-check:

• Is there already one non in the sentence or context?
• Are you using neanche/nemmeno to add something else that is negative?

5. neanch’io: “me neither”

Function: express agreement with someone else’s negative sentence.

Someone says a negative sentence:

• Io non lavoro domani. – I’m not working tomorrow.

You answer:

• Neanch’io lavoro domani. – Me neither, I’m not working tomorrow.

Form and position:

• neanche + io → neanch’io (the vowel e disappears)
• Usually at the beginning of the clause.

Typical mistakes:

• Anch’io non lavoro domani. – Grammatically possible, but means “I also don’t work tomorrow” (neutral).
  Neanch’io lavoro domani. – More natural as a direct answer: “Me neither.”
• Non io anche. ✓ Neanch’io.
