Non vs. no: two different jobs

non = the normal negation inside a sentence. It goes right before the verb.
no = a short answer (like “nope / no”). Often followed by a full negative sentence.

Where exactly does “non” go?

Rule you can trust at A1: non + verb.
It stays in front of the verb even if other words come after.

✅ Non ho tempo.
✅ Non prendo il treno.
✅ Non è aperto oggi.

Quick check: Find the verb first (ho / prendo / è). Put non immediately before it.

“Neanche” and “nemmeno”: adding “also not / neither”

Use neanche / nemmeno when you add a second negative idea: “not… and also not…”.

Meaning: neither, not… either, not even (depending on context).
At A1 level, neanche and nemmeno are usually interchangeable.

Pattern	Example
non …, neanche/nemmeno …	Non vado in banca e neanche in posta.
non …; nemmeno …	Non ho il documento; nemmeno il collega ce l’ha.
nemmeno + noun (front position)	Nemmeno l’ufficio postale apre il sabato.

Important: If there is a verb, you still usually need non to negate it.

✅ Non posso venire, neanche lui può.
~~Non posso venire, neanche lui può.~~ is correct (because non is already in the first clause). But in the second clause, the verb is positive (“può”) and the negative meaning is carried by neanche.

“Neanch’io”: agreeing with a negative statement

When someone says something negative, you can agree with neanch’io = “me neither / I don’t either”.

A: Non posso venire stasera.
B: Neanch’io (posso venire). / Neanch’io posso venire.

Form: neanche + io → neanch’io (apostrophe because of the vowel).

Common pitfall: ~~Non anch’io.~~ ✅ Neanch’io.

Decision guide (fast): which word do I choose?

Do I need a short answer? → use No.
Do I negate a verb in a sentence? → put non before the verb.
Do I add “also not / neither” (a second negative idea)? → use neanche or nemmeno.
Do I want to say “me neither”? → use neanch’io.

1 verb = 1 non? If you are negating a verb, check that non is right before it.
Answering a question? Start with No, then add a full sentence with non if needed.
Adding a second negative item/person? Use neanche/nemmeno (or neanch’io for “me neither”).

Exceptions!

The form "neanch'io" expresses agreement with a negative sentence said by another person.
