What you are doing: reporting what someone says

Discorso diretto = the exact words (with quotes).

Discorso indiretto = you report the message (no quotes), using dire + che.

Direct: Fabio: “Vado al museo.”
Reported: Fabio dice che va al museo.

The basic formula (A1): subject + dire + che + sentence

Use this structure to report simple statements:

soggetto + dice/dicono + che + frase

The key change: the verb usually switches to “he/she” form

In direct speech, the speaker often uses io (I): vado, suono, lavoro.

When you report it, you usually talk about that person: lui/lei (he/she).

Direct (I)	Reported (he/she)
“Vado al museo.”	Dice che va al museo.
“Suono il pianoforte.”	Dice che suona il pianoforte.
“Sono in ufficio.”	Dice che è in ufficio.

Tip: After che, ask yourself: “Who is the subject now?” Then pick the correct verb form.

Word order: where “che” goes (and what not to do)

Correct: Marco dice che visita il museo domani.
Correct: L’insegnante dice che Maria suona il pianoforte.
Wrong: ~~Marco dice visita che il museo domani.~~
Wrong: ~~L’insegnante dice Maria che suona il pianoforte.~~

Time words (oggi, domani, adesso): keep them as they are (for now)

At A1, you can usually keep the time expression exactly the same.

“La conferenza è domani.” → Dice che la conferenza è domani.
“Sono in riunione adesso.” → Dice che è in riunione adesso.

Note: In more advanced Italian, time words can shift in some situations. You don’t need that yet.

One common confusion: “dire che” vs “dire di”

In this unit you need dire che because you report a full sentence with a verb.

Full sentence → che: Dice che la mostra è chiusa.
Not this here: ~~Dice di la mostra è chiusa.~~

Self-check: 3 quick questions before you choose the verb

Who reports? (dice / dicono / dico)
Who is the subject after “che”? (he/she/they?)
Is the verb form matching that subject? (va / suona / è / sono)

If all three answers are clear, your sentence is usually correct.

What you should be able to do now

Turn quotes into a reported sentence with dice/dicono che.
Change the verb from io to lui/lei when reporting someone else.
Keep the message intact and focus on subject + verb agreement after che.

The formula to build indirect speech is: soggetto + dire che + subordinata.
