What are time adverbs in Italian?

Time adverbs tell us when something happens.
In this unit you see: poi, dopo, prima, già, ora/adesso.
They help you put events in a clear order when you speak.

Prima, poi, dopo – what is the difference?

These three often cause confusion. Use this overview when you speak.

To connect two actions in one sentence, the most natural choice is usually poi.
To point to a time point (after dinner, after work, etc.), the most natural choice is usually dopo + noun.

Quick check

“then I read” → normally poi leggo.
“after dinner I read” → normally dopo cena leggo.

Where can I put time adverbs in the sentence?

Time adverbs in Italian are flexible, but the position changes the focus.

At the beginning of the sentence → you emphasize the time.
- Prima preparo la cena e poi guardo una serie.
- Dopo cena parlo con i miei colleghi.
- Adesso leggo un articolo.
In the middle / before the verb → common with già.
- Ho già finito il lavoro.
- Non ho già deciso. (A1: you will more often say: Non ho ancora deciso = not yet.)
At the end of the sentence → you add information, without strong focus.
- Torniamo a casa dopo.
- Parlo con il capo adesso.
- Faccio una pausa caffè poi. (more spoken and informal)

For A1, it is safe to use this simple pattern:

Time word + subject + verb + (rest of the sentence)
Example: Adesso io lavoro da casa.

Prima di… vs dopo + noun – typical A1 structures

These two structures are very frequent in daily conversation.

prima di + infinitive = before doing something
- Prima di uscire chiudo il computer.
- Prima di dormire leggo un libro.
dopo + noun = after + activity / time
- Dopo il lavoro faccio una passeggiata.
- Dopo la riunione prendo un caffè.

Be careful not to mix them:

~~Prima lavoro di uscire~~ → Prima di uscire lavoro.
~~Dopo mangiare vado in ufficio~~ → at A1 better: Dopo pranzo vado in ufficio.

Ora / adesso – saying “now” in Italian

ora and adesso both mean “now”.
In spoken Italian, adesso is very common and a bit more informal.
In many situations you can use them as synonyms.

Adesso lavoro da casa.
Ora abbiamo una riunione.
Studio italiano adesso, prima studiavo tedesco.

Typical pattern at A1:

Ora / Adesso + present tense
- Adesso parlo con il cliente.
- Ora non ho tempo.

Già – “already” with the passato prossimo

Già is very often used with the passato prossimo.

Form: auxiliary (avere/essere) + già + participle

Negative	Non ho già finito, ho ancora molto lavoro.	I have not already finished, I still have a lot of work.

Compare:

Ho già finito. = The action is complete earlier than expected.
Non ho ancora finito. = I have not finished yet. (useful everyday phrase)

Typical mistake to avoid:

~~Già ho finito il lavoro~~ → correct but less natural at A1, prefer: Ho già finito il lavoro.

How to build clear sequences: before → now → then

For conversation, it is useful to have a simple “template” in mind.

Prima di / Prima + activity in the present or infinitive
- Prima di lavorare faccio sport.
Ora / Adesso + present
- Adesso lavoro in ufficio.
Poi / Dopo + next action
- Poi torno a casa e cucino.
- Dopo il lavoro esco con gli amici.

Typical small mistakes (and how to fix them)

Using “poi” where Italian prefers “dopo + noun”
- ~~Poi cena guardo una serie.~~
- → Dopo cena guardo una serie.
Forgetting “di” after “prima” before an infinitive
- ~~Prima uscire chiudo la porta.~~
- → Prima di uscire chiudo la porta.
Placing “già” in an unusual position
- ~~Già ho visto il film.~~
- → Ho già visto il film.
Mixing past and “now”
- Use adesso / ora with the present tense.
- Adesso lavoro da casa. (not passato prossimo)
