The interrogatives: "Quando?", "Quanto?"

1. What are quanto / quanta / quanti / quante and quando for?

• quando? = when? (time, date)
• quanto? (m. sing.) = how much?
• quanta? (f. sing.) = how much?
• quanti? (m. pl.) = how many?
• quante? (f. pl.) = how many?

Key idea: in Italian, quanto must agree with the noun you count (gender + number).

First question in your head:

• Am I asking about time / date? → use quando?
• Am I asking about amount / number? → use quanto / quanta / quanti / quante?

Examples:

• Quando è il tuo compleanno? → time → quando
• Quanti anni hai? → number of years → a form of quanto

4. Step 2 – Choose the right form of quanto

When you need how much / how many, look at the noun immediately after:

1. Find the noun. (water, friends, meetings...)
2. Check gender (masculine / feminine).
3. Check number (singular / plural).
4. Match the form of quanto to that noun.

5. Typical patterns you will say very often

• Quanti anni hai? – How old are you?
  (literally: How many years do you have?)
• Quando è il tuo compleanno? – When is your birthday?
• Quando compi gli anni? – When is your birthday? (When do you turn your age?)
• Quanto costa ...? – How much does ... cost?
• Quanto tempo hai? – How much time do you have?

These are useful “ready-made” questions for conversations.

• Using the wrong form with the noun
  Quanti acqua bevi? → Quanta acqua bevi?
  acqua is feminine singular → quanta
• Forgetting that some plural words are masculine
  soldi (money) is masculine plural:
  Quante soldi hai? → Quanti soldi hai?
• Confusing time and quantity
  For a date, always use quando, not a form of quanto:
  Quanto è il tuo compleanno? → Quando è il tuo compleanno?
• For cost, use quanto, not quando
  Quando costa questo libro? → Quanto costa questo libro?

Try to answer “yes” to each point:

• I can decide quickly: do I need quando (time) or quanto, quanta, quanti, quante (amount/number)?
• If I use a form of quanto, I look at the noun after it and match gender and number.
• I can form these questions correctly:

  – Quanta acqua bevi ogni giorno?
  – Quanto tempo hai oggi?
