When to use quando vs. quanto/quanta/quanti/quante

These question words cover two very common needs:

Quando? = asks about time (when?)
Quanto/Quanta/Quanti/Quante? = asks about quantity (how much / how many?) and must agree with the noun

When?	Quando è la riunione?	È martedì. / È il 10 maggio.
How much / how many?	Quanta acqua bevi?	Bevo due litri.

Step 1: Choose the right type of question

Time (day, date, month, hour) → use quando.
Quantity (number/amount) → use quanto….

Quick check: If you can answer with a date/time, it’s quando. If you answer with a number/amount, it’s quanto….

Step 2: With quanto…, match gender and number

Quanto behaves like an adjective: it changes to match the noun that follows.

Feminine plural	quante	Quante sorelle ha?

Countable vs. “amount”: what learners often mix up

Countable = you can count items (1, 2, 3…) → often plural: quanti/quante
- amici, libri, riunioni, email
Amount = a substance or something seen as a quantity → often singular: quanto/quanta
- acqua, pasta, caffè, tempo, denaro

Same idea, different focus:

Quanti caffè bevi? = how many cups (countable)
Quanto caffè bevi? = how much coffee (quantity, general)

Special case you will hear a lot: Quanti anni…?

Age is expressed with anni (years), which is masculine plural.

Quanti anni hai?
Quanti anni compi?

Common mistake: ~~Quanto anni hai?~~ → ✅ Quanti anni hai?

Word order: keep it simple

Most of the time, put the interrogative at the start: Quando…? / Quanti…?
Then: verb + subject (subject can be omitted): Quanti amici hai?

Self-check before you speak

Am I asking “when”? → use quando.
Am I asking “how much/how many”? → use quanto….
Which noun follows? Identify gender + singular/plural.
Match the ending: -o / -a / -i / -e.

Some interrogatives change according to the gender and/or number of the noun.
Use quanto, quanta, quanti, quante with countable nouns.
