1. What are potere, volere and dovere?
- Potere = can / to be able to (possibility, permission)
- Volere = to want (wish, intention)
- Dovere = must / have to (obligation, necessity)
They are called modal verbs. They work together with another verb in the infinitive.
At A1 you mainly use them in the present tense + infinitive.
2. Core pattern: modal verb + infinitive
Always think in this simple pattern:
- subject + modal verb + infinitive
The modal verb changes (I/you/he…), the infinitive stays the same.
| Italian |
Literal meaning |
Structure |
| Io posso lavorare. |
I can work. |
Io + posso + lavorare |
| Lei vuole mangiare. |
She wants to eat. |
Lei + vuole + mangiare |
| Noi dobbiamo studiare. |
We must study. |
Noi + dobbiamo + studiare |
Never conjugate the second verb:
Io posso lavoro → Io posso lavorare
Lei deve va a casa → Lei deve andare a casa
3. When to choose potere, volere or dovere?
Ask yourself: What do I want to express?
-
Possibility / permission → potere
- physical or practical possibility: can
- permission: may
- Examples:
- Posso pagare con la carta? = Can I pay by card?
- Puoi aprire la finestra? = Can you open the window?
-
Wish / desire → volere
- what you want or do not want
- Examples:
- Voglio bere un caffè. = I want to drink a coffee.
- Non voglio aspettare. = I don’t want to wait.
-
Obligation / necessity → dovere
- rules, duties, things you have to do
- Examples:
- Devo lavorare domani. = I have to work tomorrow.
- Dobbiamo pagare il conto. = We must pay the bill.
Self-check:
- If you could replace it with can or may → probably potere.
- If you could replace it with want (to) → probably volere.
- If you could replace it with must / have to → probably dovere.
4. Conjugation: focus on the forms that change a lot
These verbs are irregular. Some forms look very different from the infinitive.
| Person |
Potere |
Volere |
Dovere |
| io |
posso |
voglio |
devo |
| tu |
puoi |
vuoi |
devi |
| lui / lei |
può |
vuole |
deve |
| noi |
possiamo |
vogliamo |
dobbiamo |
| voi |
potete |
volete |
dovete |
| loro |
possono |
vogliono |
devono |
Tip: at first, concentrate on:
- io / tu / lui-lei / loro forms (they are most irregular)
- noi / voi are more regular and easier to remember.
5. Typical spelling traps
- Può has an accent on ò.
- Correct: può
- Wrong:
puo, pò
- Possono has -ss-, not one s.
- Correct: possono
- Wrong:
posono
- Vogliono (they want) keeps gli.
- Correct: vogliono
- Wrong:
volgiono, voliono
- Dobbiamo has double b.
- Correct: dobbiamo
- Wrong:
dobiamo
6. Word order and negation
The word order is simple and stable:
- subject + modal verb + infinitive
Examples:
- Io devo studiare stasera. = I have to study tonight.
- Voi potete entrare adesso. = You (plural) can enter now.
Negation: non goes before the modal verb.
- non + modal verb + infinitive
Examples:
- Non posso venire. = I can’t come.
- Lei non vuole aspettare. = She doesn’t want to wait.
- Non dobbiamo parlare inglese. = We must not speak English.
Compare:
- Non posso entrare. = I can’t enter.
- Posso non entrare? = Is it possible that I do not enter? (less common, more nuanced)
At A1, use mainly: non + modal.
7. Questions with modal verbs
Good news: in Italian, the word order often stays the same.
- subject + modal verb + infinitive + ?
Examples:
- Puoi aprire la porta? = Can you open the door?
- Volete mangiare adesso? = Do you want to eat now?
- Devi lavorare domani? = Do you have to work tomorrow?
Very often, the subject is omitted if it is clear:
- (Tu) puoi venire stasera? → Puoi venire stasera?
So you mainly need the correct modal form to show who the subject is.
8. Polite forms: Lei and vorrei
In shops and formal situations you often hear:
- Lei può…? = Can you (formal) … ?
- Lei deve… = You (formal) must …
Examples:
- Lei può firmare qui? = Can you sign here?
- Lei deve pagare alla cassa. = You must pay at the cashier.
For volere, the polite form is usually:
- Vorrei… = I would like… (soft / polite)
Examples:
- Vorrei una giacca blu. = I would like a blue jacket.
- Vorrei provare questi pantaloni. = I would like to try these trousers.
Self-check:
- In a shop, prefer Vorrei… instead of a direct Voglio….
9. Common learner mistakes to avoid
-
Conjugating both verbs
Posso vado al lavoro.
- → Posso andare al lavoro. (infinitive)
-
Using the wrong modal verb
Voglio pagare il biglietto. (could sound demanding in some contexts)
- In a shop: Vorrei pagare il biglietto. (more polite)
- For obligation: use devo, not voglio.
-
Wrong negative position
Posso non venire. (possible, but advanced nuance)
- At A1, say: Non posso venire.
-
Forgetting the subject in formal speech
- With Lei (formal), you usually keep the pronoun for clarity:
- Lei può provare la giacca? (more natural in a shop)
10. Quick self-check: can I use these verbs now?
Go through these questions mentally. If you can answer “yes”, you are ready to use the grammar in conversation.
- Can I choose between potere / volere / dovere depending on whether I mean can / want / must?
- Can I build sentences with the pattern subject + modal verb + infinitive?
- Do I remember that the second verb is always infinitive (mangiare, lavorare, andare…)?
- Can I say simple negatives like Non posso, Non voglio, Non devo?
- Can I ask simple questions like Puoi…?, Vuoi…?, Devi…? without changing the word order too much?
- In a shop, do I know polite forms like Vorrei… and Lei può…??
If some points are still unclear, focus on:
- repeating the irregular forms (io/tu/lui-lei/loro)
- building many short sentences from your own life (work, family, daily routine).
Example mini-practice you can do alone:
- Write 3 sentences with devo (things you must do today).
- Write 3 sentences with voglio (things you want this week).
- Write 3 questions with puoi / potete / può (things you ask other people).
This will prepare you well for speaking activities in class.
