-mente adverbs describe how an action happens (like English -ly).

  • Parla lentamente = He/she speaks slowly.
  • Corre velocemente = He/she runs quickly.
  • Spiega chiaramente = He/she explains clearly.

How to form them (the core rule)

In A1, the most useful rule is:

  • Take the adjective in the feminine singular form
  • Add -mente

Spelling patterns you should notice

  • Adjectives ending in -o usually change to -a before -mente:
    • chiaro → chiara + mente → chiaramente
    • rapido → rapida + mente → rapidamente
  • Adjectives ending in -e usually stay the same:
    • gentile → gentile + mente → gentilmente
    • veloce → veloce + mente → velocemente

Common mistakes (and the quick fix)

  • Don’t use the adjective form after the verb:
    • Parla lento. ✅ Parla lentamente.
    • Risponde rapida. ✅ Risponde rapidamente.
  • Don’t split the word:
    • lenta mente ✅ lentamente
  • Don’t double it:

Where to place the adverb in the sentence

At A1, these placements are the most natural:

  • After the verb (most common): Parla lentamente.
  • After the object (also common): Spiega la regola chiaramente.
  • At the end for emphasis: Risponde alle email rapidamente.

  • Adverb = describes the action
    • Lui parla lentamente. (How does he speak? Slowly.)
