Las conjunciones unen palabras o frases en una oración.

(Conjunctions join words or phrases in a sentence.)

1. What are these small words?

  • y / e = and
  • o / u = or
  • pero = but
  • si = if

We use them to connect words and ideas in one clear sentence.

2. When do I use y and when e?

Both mean and.

  • Use y in most cases.
  • Use e only before words that start with the sound i.
Form Use before… Example
y normal consonants and vowels pan y queso (bread and cheese)
e words that start with i- or hi- and sound like i café e infusiones (coffee and infusions)
  • Why? Spanish avoids two similar vowel sounds together. y infusiones is harder to say than e infusiones.

Wrong → café y infusiones

Correct → café e infusiones

Quick self-check

  1. Look at the first letter of the next word.
  2. If it is i or hi and sounds like /i/, use e.
  3. In all other cases, use y.

3. When do I use o and when u?

Both mean or.

  • Use o in most cases.
  • Use u before words that start with the sound o.
Form Use before… Example
o normal consonants and vowels agua o té (water or tea)
u words that start with o- or ho- and sound like o pan u otra cosa (bread or something else)

Wrong → pan o otra cosa

Correct → pan u otra cosa

Quick self-check

  1. Look at the first letter of the next word.
  2. If it is o or ho and sounds like /o/, use u.
  3. In all other cases, use o.

4. How to think about the sound rule

Important: it is about the sound, not only the letter.

  • y → e before words that sound like i…
  • o → u before words that sound like o…

In practice, at A1 level, just remember:

  • y / e → check first letter i / hi
  • o / u → check first letter o / ho

5. Using pero to contrast

Use pero (but) to connect two ideas that are in contrast.

  • Structure: idea A + pero + idea B
Spanish Meaning
Me gusta el queso, pero no la leche. I like cheese, but not milk.
El buffet es variado, pero no es muy sano. The buffet is varied, but not very healthy.

Quick self-check

  1. Do the two parts go in different directions? (positive vs. negative, expectation vs. reality)
  2. If yes, connect them with pero.

6. Using si to express a condition

Use si (if) to say that one action depends on another.

  • Structure: Si + condition, + result
Spanish Meaning
Si tienes sal, podemos cocinar. If you have salt, we can cook.
Vamos al restaurante si tú tienes tiempo. We go to the restaurant if you have time.

Tip

  • si = if (condition)
  • (with accent) = yes (answer)

7. Step-by-step: choosing the right conjunction

  1. First question: What is the relation between the ideas?
    • Both are true and go together → use y / e.
    • You choose between them → use o / u.
    • They contrast → use pero.
    • One depends on a condition → use si.
  2. Second question (only for y/e and o/u): How does the next word start?
    • Before i- / hi-e.
    • Before o- / ho-u.
    • In all other cases → y or o.

8. Mini self-test: can you explain it?

Check if you can answer these questions (in your own words):

  • When do I change y to e?
  • When do I change o to u?
  • How do I show contrast between two ideas?
  • How do I say that one action depends on a condition?

If you can answer these, you are ready to use these conjunctions in conversation.

  1. Use "y" and to join words.
  2. Use "pero" to join sentences.
  3. Use "si" in subordinate clauses.
Conjunción (Conjunction)Ejemplo (Example)
YHuevos y pan (Eggs and bread)
ECafé e infusiones (Coffee and herbal teas)
OAgua o (Water or tea)
UPan u otra cosa (Bread or something else)
PeroEl queso sí pero la leche no (Cheese yes but milk no)
SiSi tienes sal podemos cocinar. (If you have salt we can cook.)

Exceptions!

  1. Use "e" instead of "y" before words that begin with "i-" or "hi-". For example: "e infusiones".
  2. Use "u" instead of "o" with words that begin with "o-" or "ho-". For example: "u otra cosa".
