Demonstrative Adjectives in Spanish: Este, Ese, Aquel

This lesson focuses on demonstrative adjectives in Spanish, which are used to indicate the location of a noun in relation to the speaker, either in space or in time. These adjectives help you point out specific things and describe their proximity.

Overview of Demonstrative Adjectives

Spanish demonstrative adjectives must agree in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) with the noun they modify. The main demonstratives are grouped by distance:

  • Nearby (Cerca): Este, Esta, Estos, Estas
  • Middle distance (Media distancia): Ese, Esa, Esos, Esas
  • Far away (Lejos): Aquel, Aquella, Aquellos, Aquellas

Examples by Gender, Number, and Distance

Plural: Estos — Estos pantalones son anchos.
Singular: Esta — Esta camisa es nueva.
Plural: Estas — Estas manzanas son grandes.
Middle distance (Media distancia)Singular: Ese — Ese pan es suave.
Plural: Esos — Esos países son grandes.
Singular: Esa — Esa falda es estrecha.
Plural: Esas — Esas profesiones son duras.

Key Points to Remember

  • These adjectives always come before the noun.
  • Make sure to match the adjective to the noun's gender and number: este libro (masculine singular), estas casas (feminine plural).
  • They help express spatial relationships: near, mid-distance, or far.
  • The choice between este, ese, and aquel depends on how close the speaker perceives the noun to be.

Differences Between Spanish and English Demonstratives

Unlike English, where 'this' and 'that' are primarily used, Spanish has an additional category with aquel and its forms to specifically indicate something farther away, adding clarity about distance.

Useful Spanish phrases and their English equivalents:

  • Este libro – This book (very close to the speaker)
  • Ese libro – That book (not too close, possibly near the listener)
  • Aquel libro – That book over there (far from both speaker and listener)

Remember that in Spanish, demonstrative adjectives must agree with the noun's gender and number, which is different from English where 'this' and 'that' do not change.

By mastering este, ese, aquel and their forms, you will be able to clearly specify things based on their location relative to you and others.
