Difference between Ser vs Estar

Ser vs. estar: the core idea

• Spanish has two verbs for “to be”: ser and estar.
• They are not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong one can change the meaning.
• A simple A1 rule that works in most cases:
  • Ser = what something IS (identity, nature, permanent traits).
  • Estar = how/where something IS now (state, emotion, location).

Ser: what something IS (more permanent)

Use ser when you talk about what something or someone is by nature.

• Identity & profession
  • Yo soy Ana. (I am Ana.)
  • Ella es ingeniera. (She is an engineer.)
• Origin & nationality
  • Nosotros somos de México. (We are from Mexico.)
  • Tú eres español. (You are Spanish.)
• More permanent characteristics
  • Mi jefe es muy serio. (My boss is very serious – in general.)
  • La mesa es ancha. (The table is wide.)
• General descriptions
  • La película es aburrida. (The film is boring – by nature.)
  • El cielo es oscuro. (The sky is dark – as a general description.)

Estar: how/where something IS (temporary state, location)

Use estar when you talk about how someone or something is now, or where it is.

• Temporary physical or mental state
  • Hoy estoy cansado. (Today I am tired.)
  • Mi amigo está nervioso. (My friend is nervous now.)
• Emotions
  • María está feliz hoy. (María is happy today.)
  • Estamos tristes. (We are sad.)
• Location (people, things, places)
  • El libro está sobre la mesa. (The book is on the table.)
  • Mi jefe está en la oficina. (My boss is in the office.)
  • Madrid está en España. (Madrid is in Spain.)
• Temporary conditions
  • El camino está mojado. (The path is wet now.)
  • El café está frío. (The coffee is cold now.)

Quick decision guide: SER or ESTAR

Ask yourself one clear question before you choose the verb.

1. Are you talking about identity, origin, profession or a long-term trait?
   • Yes → use ser.
   • No → go to step 2.
2. Are you talking about a current state, emotion, or location?
   • Yes → use estar.

If both feel possible, think:

• “Is this usually true?” → more like ser.
• “Is this only true now / today / at the moment?” → more like estar.

  • ¿Cómo eres hoy?

• 4. Forgetting that emotions are with ESTAR
  • Mi jefe es nervioso hoy.
  • ✔ Mi jefe está nervioso hoy. (He is nervous today.)

  • ser + de + lugar: Soy de Perú. (I am from Peru.)
  • ser + profesión: Ella es abogada. (She is a lawyer.)
