Neuter nouns ending in -um: muzeum

Neuter nouns ending in -um have a characteristic, irregular declension.

What’s special about Polish nouns ending in -um?

Words like muzeum look “neutral” and often come from Latin/Greek. In Polish they behave in a special way:

  • In the singular, they are usually unchanged in all cases: muzeum.
  • In the plural, they decline normally: muzea, muzeów, muzeom, muzeami, muzeach.

This pattern also applies to: centrum, akwarium, forum, liceum, archiwum.

The key rule (memorize this)

  • Singular: one form everywhere → muzeum
  • Plural: different endings depending on the case → e.g. muzea (Nom/Acc), muzeów (Gen), muzeach (Loc)

Mini-map: which case do you actually need in real life?

Meaning you want Typical Polish question / preposition Form of muzeum
“the museum” (subject / what?) Co? muzeum
“(I recommend / I visit) the museum” often Accusative after verbs muzeum
“to the museum” do + Genitive do muzeum
“in the museum” / “about museums” w + Locative, o + Locative w muzeum (sg) / w muzeach (pl)
“tickets to two museums” do + Genitive do dwóch muzeów

How to build the plural forms (fast pattern)

Think of the plural as if the word loses -um and then declines as muze-:

Case (plural) Ending Example
Nominative / Accusative -a muzea
Genitive -ów muzeów
Dative -om muzeom
Instrumental -ami muzeami
Locative -ach muzeach

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • Mistake 1: trying to change the singular.

    Idę do muzeomu.Idę do muzeum.

  • Mistake 2: using singular after a plural number.

    Zwiedziliśmy dwa muzeum.Zwiedziliśmy dwa muzea.

  • Mistake 3: forgetting Locative after o (“about”) and w (“in”).

    Rozmawiamy o muzea.Rozmawiamy o muzeach.

Important exception: not every word ending in -um is this type

Some nouns that look similar are actually masculine and decline regularly (no “unchanged singular” rule):

  • tłumtłumu
  • rozumrozumu
  • albumalbumu

Quick check: if the base form ends in -um (like muzeum), it’s usually the special type. If it ends in -um only in spelling but behaves like a normal masculine noun (like album), decline it normally.

Self-check: choose the form in 3 steps

  1. Singular or plural? (one museum vs. two/three museums)
  2. Which preposition/verb? e.g. do → Genitive, w/o → Locative
  3. If singular: almost always muzeum. If plural: pick the plural ending (-a, -ów, -ach…).

Result: you spend less time “thinking about cases” and more time choosing: singular = fixed, plural = normal endings.

  1. Słowa zakończone na -um z nieregularną odmianą to muzeum, centrum, akwarium, forum, liceum, archiwum.
 L. poj. (singular)L. mn. (plural)
Mianownik (nominative)muzeum (museum)muzea (museums)
Dopełniacz (genitive)muzeum (muzeum)muzeów (muzeów)
Celownik (dative)muzeum (muzeum)muzeom (muzeom)
Biernik (accusative)muzeum (muzeum)muzea (muzea)
Narzędnik (instrumental)muzeum (muzeum)muzeami (muzeami)
Miejscownik (locative)muzeum (muzeum)muzeach (muzeach)
Wołacz (vocative)muzeum (muzeum)muzea (muzea)

Exceptions!

  1. Wyjątkiem są rzeczowniki rodzaju męskiego, które odmieniają się regularnie (np. tłum – tłumu, rozum – rozumu, album - albumu).
