Neuter nouns ending in -um: muzeum

Rzeczowniki nijakie zakończone na -um: muzeum

Rzeczowniki rodzaju nijakiego zakończone na -um mają charakterystyczną, nieregularną odmianę.

(Neuter nouns ending in -um have a characteristic, irregular declension.)

What’s special about Polish nouns ending in -um?

Some Polish words borrowed from Latin/Greek end in -um. In Polish they behave a bit differently:

  • They are usually neuter (rodzaj nijaki).
  • In singular, most case forms look the same: muzeum.
  • In plural, they change more clearly: muzea, muzeów, muzeom…

The core pattern (learn this first)

For irregular -um nouns like muzeum, think:

  • Singular: almost always -um stays (muzeum).
  • Plural: -um → -a in nominative/accusative/vocative (muzea).
  • Genitive plural: often ends in -ów (muzeów).
When you need… Use Typical trigger (EN → PL)
1 museum (subject) muzeum “The museum is…” → Muzeum jest…
2+ museums (subject/object) muzea “We visit two museums” → Zwiedzamy dwa muzea
of / no / (many) museums muzeów “I’m looking for museums” → Szukam muzeów
to / for museums muzeom “We give info to museums” → …muzeom
in museums muzeach “in” → w muzeach
with museums muzeami “with” → z muzeami

Why does the singular look “unchanged” in so many cases?

In this group, the singular forms are syncretic (many cases share one form).

  • muzeum = nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental, locative, vocative (singular)
  • This is why phrases like these all contain muzeum:
  • Idę do muzeum. (to the museum)
  • Jestem w muzeum. (in the museum)
  • Interesuję się muzeum. (interested in the museum)

Good news: for singular you mostly focus on the preposition and word order, not the ending.

The main forms you actually need in conversation

At A2, you’ll use these most often:

  • Singular: muzeum
    • do muzeum (to), w muzeum (in), przed muzeum (in front of)
  • Plural:
    • muzea (2+ museums, “I visit museums”)
    • muzeów (I’m looking for / there are no / a lot of museums)
    • w muzeach (in museums)

Words that follow the same irregular -um pattern

These behave like muzeum:

  • centrumcentra, centrów
  • akwariumakwaria, akwariów
  • forumfora, forów
  • liceumlicea, liceów
  • archiwumarchiwa, archiwów

Shortcut: if it’s a “place/institution/object” ending in -um, expect plural -a and genitive plural -ów.

Important exception: not every word ending in -um belongs here

Some Polish masculine nouns just happen to end in -um and decline normally.

  • tłumtłumu (not tłumum)
  • rozumrozumu
  • albumalbumu

How to notice: they do not have the “-um borrowed noun” feeling (like museum/centrum), and their plural is not -a in the same way (albumy, not alba).

Self-check: choose quickly (a practical checklist)

  1. Do you mean one museum? → almost always muzeum.
  2. Do you mean two/three/four museums? → dwa/trzy/cztery muzea.
  3. Do you mean of / no / (many) museums or after szukać? → muzeów.
  4. Is it in (w) museums? → w muzeach.

Most common mistake: using muzea after szukam. Correct: Szukam muzeów w centrum.

  1. Words ending in -um with irregular declension are muzeum, centrum, akwarium, forum, liceum, archiwum.
 L. poj. (singular)L. mn. (plural)
Mianownik (nominative)muzeum (museum)muzea (museums)
Dopełniacz (genitive)muzeum (muzeum)muzeów (muzeów)
Celownik (dative)muzeum (muzeum)muzeom (muzeom)
Biernik (accusative)muzeum (muzeum)muzea (muzea)
Narzędnik (instrumental)muzeum (muzeum)muzeami (muzeami)
Miejscownik (locative)muzeum (muzeum)muzeach (muzeach)
Wołacz (vocative)muzeum (muzeum)muzea (muzea)

Exceptions!

  1. An exception are masculine nouns, which decline regularly (e.g. tłum – tłumu, rozum – rozumu, album - albumu).
