Passive voice: jest czytana, została przeczytana

The passive voice in Polish is formed by combining "być" (to be) or "zostać" (to become / to get) with a passive adjectival participle.

When do I use być vs zostać in the passive?

Polish has two very common passive patterns. The choice is mainly about meaning, not only tense.

  • być + passive participle = a state or a regular / general action (what is usually done).
  • zostać + passive participle = a one-time, completed event (what happened / got done).
What you mean Recommended passive Typical time words
habit / process (often, generally) jest / była / będzie + participle często, zwykle, zawsze, co tydzień
single finished action (done once) został / została / zostanie + participle wczoraj, o 9:00, w zeszłym tygodniu, nagle

How to build the passive step by step (A2-friendly)

  1. Pick the object from the active sentence → it becomes the new subject.
  2. Add być (general/repeated) or zostać (completed/one-time) in the right tense.
  3. Add the passive participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy bierny).
  4. Optional: add the doer with przez + Accusative (biernik).

Active: Recenzenci skrytykowali powieść.

Passive: Powieść została skrytykowana przez recenzentów.

Quick self-check: “Is it być or zostać?”

  • If you can naturally add “often / usually” → choose być.

Moja ulubiona książka jest bardzo często wypożyczana.

  • If you can naturally add “yesterday / at 10:00 / once” → choose zostać.

    Film został doceniony na festiwalu.

The participle must agree (gender/number) with the new subject

In the passive, the participle behaves like an adjective: it matches the subject.

Subject (new topic) Form Example
masc. singular (film) -y Film był doceniony.
fem. singular (powieść) -a Powieść została skrytykowana.
neut. singular (zdanie) -e Zdanie zostało napisane.
plural non-masculine-personal (książki) -e Książki są wypożyczane.
plural masculine-personal (pracownicy) -i Pracownicy zostali poinformowani.

“Przez” vs no “przez”: when to mention the doer

  • Use przez + biernik when the doer is important or new information.

    Umowa została podpisana przez pracowników.

  • Skip przez… when it is obvious, unknown, or not relevant.

Raport jest wysyłany w każdy poniedziałek.

  • Form reminder: przez + Accusative

    przez pracownikomprzez pracowników

Aspect (niedokonany/dokonany): the practical A2 rule

  • być is most natural with imperfective verbs (niedokonane): repeated, ongoing, regular.

    drukować → Faktury są drukowane.

  • zostać is most natural with perfective verbs (dokonane): completed result.

    wydrukować → Faktury zostały wydrukowane.

  • Real life: you may sometimes see być with perfective participles to describe a resulting state.

Drzwi są zamknięte. (= they are in the “closed” state)

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Don’t overuse “przez”. Polish often prefers passive without the doer.
  • Check agreement twice:

    powieśćzostała skrytykowana (not został skrytykowany)

  • Choose the right meaning:

    Co tydzień…jest (routine)

    Wczoraj…został / została (single event)

What you should be able to do after this

  • Turn an active sentence into passive by moving the object to the front.
  • Choose być for routines/states and zostać for completed events.
  • Make the participle match the subject (gender/number).
  • Use przez + biernik only when the doer matters.
  1. Być + passive adjectival participle of imperfective verbs (sometimes perfective) + przez + accusative.
  2. Zostać + imiesłów przymiotnikowy bierny czasowników dokonanych + przez + biernik.
