Personal pronouns in the dative: mi, tobie, jemu...

Declension of personal pronouns in the dative case.

Celownik (Dative) with pronouns: what it really means

Use the dative when the pronoun is the indirect object: the person who receives something or benefits from the action.

  • Daję mi… = I’m giving to me… (someone gives me something)
  • Mówię ci… = I’m speaking to you
  • Pomagam mu… = I’m helping him

Good English test: if you can add to/for in English, Polish often uses the dative.

Full vs short forms: the placement rule you need

Use the full form Use the short form
  • at the beginning of the sentence
  • at the end of the sentence
  • after a preposition (do, dla, dzięki, przeciwko…)
  • when you want contrast/emphasis
  • most often right after the verb
  • in neutral, everyday speech

Mini examples

  • Mi proszę dodać sos. (after the verb would also be common: Proszę mi dodać sos.)
  • Tobie nie powiem. / Nie powiem ci. (full at the start, short after the verb)
  • To jest prezent dla mnie. (after a preposition → full)

The key pairs (and what sounds natural)

These pairs mean the same thing; the difference is mainly position and emphasis.

Person Full form Short form Most typical placement
me mnie mi Proszę mi… / Dla mnie
you (sg.) tobie ci Dam ci… / Dzięki tobie
him / it jemu, niemu mu Powiem mu… / Przyglądam się jemu
her jej Daję jej… / Dla niej… (note below)
us nam Proszę nam powiedzieć…
you (pl.) wam Dam wam znać…
them im, nim Pomogę im… / Dzięki nim

Why do we sometimes add n-? (niemu, nim)

Rule: after a preposition, Polish often adds n- to 3rd person pronouns.

  • for him: dla niego (not dla jego)
  • thanks to him: dzięki niemu
  • with them / thanks to them: z nimi, dzięki nim

Tip: if there is a preposition right before the pronoun, be ready for n-.

Common traps: dative vs accusative (mi vs mnie)

Don’t mix up cases. The dative answers: to whom? / for whom?

  • Daj mi wodę. = Give me (to me) water.
  • Widzisz mnie? = Do you see me? (accusative, not dative)
  • Proszę mi powiedzieć… = Please tell me

Word order: where the short form wants to sit

Short dative pronouns (mi, ci, mu) behave like “clitics”: they prefer an early position in the sentence.

  • Proszę mi dodać sos. (very natural)
  • Nie mów mi o tym. (short form right after the verb)
  • Mnie proszę powiedzieć. (full form for emphasis: “tell ME”)

Self-check: choose the form in 3 steps

  1. Meaning: is it “to/for someone”? If yes → dative.
  2. Position:
    • after a preposition / start / end → full form (mnie, tobie, jemu…)
    • after the verb in neutral speech → short form (mi, ci, mu)
  3. Preposition + 3rd person: check if you need n- (niemu, nim).
  1. Full forms (mnie, tobie) can be used at the beginning and at the end of a sentence, and after prepositions.
  2. Unstressed short forms (mi, ci) are most often used after the verb.
Mianownik (Nominative)Celownik (Dative)
