Relative pronoun: który, jaki

The relative pronouns który and jaki are words that connect two sentences and replace a word so you don’t repeat it.

Który vs jaki: the core idea (in relative clauses)

Both który and jaki can work like English who/which/that in Polish relative clauses.

  • który = you point to a specific, identifiable person/thing (selected from “known” options).
  • jaki = you ask about type/quality (from a more open set of possibilities). Often feels like English what kind of… / what… is it like?

Practical shortcut: if you can mentally add “the one that…”, choose który. If it’s “what kind / what sort”, choose jaki.

Comma rule: when it’s a relative pronoun

  • In Polish, a relative clause is normally separated with a comma: , który / jaka / które / którzy…
Correct Why
To jest hasło, które powinienem wpisać do Wi‑Fi. Relative clause → comma before the pronoun.
To jest hasło które powinienem wpisać do Wi‑Fi. Comma missing.

Choosing the form: match gender + number (like an adjective)

The form changes to agree with the noun it describes (the “head noun”).

Head noun Use Example
pokój (masc. sg.) który / jaki To jest pokój, który ma dostęp do Wi‑Fi.
godzina (fem. sg.) która / jaka Nie wiem, jaka jest godzina wymeldowania.
hasło (neut. sg.) które / jakie To jest hasło, które powinienem wpisać.
goście (men-personal pl.) którzy / jacy Goście, którzy przyjechali wcześniej, już się zameldowali.
rzeczy (non-men-personal pl.) które / jakie Ręczniki, które dostałem, są brudne.

Important: in Polish you usually cannot “drop” the pronoun

In English you can say: “The room I booked…” (pronoun omitted). In Polish you normally must keep it.

  • English: The room (that) I booked is small.
  • Polish: Pokój, który zarezerwowałem, jest mały. (pronoun stays)
  • Pokój, zarezerwowałem, jest mały. (unnatural/incorrect)

Który vs jaki in “hidden questions” (Nie wiem…, Zastanawiam się…)

When you report a question (an indirect question), Polish often uses jaki/jaka/jakie where English uses what.

  • Nie wiem, jaka jest godzina wymeldowania. = I don’t know what the check-out time is.
  • Nie pamiętam, jaki jest numer pokoju. = I don’t remember what the room number is.

Self-check: if your English sentence starts with “I don’t know what…”, Polish will very often need jaki/jaka/jakie (not co).

Two quick decision steps (use this while speaking)

  1. Am I identifying a specific thing/person? → choose który.
  2. Am I asking about the kind/type/quality (or reporting such a question)? → choose jaki.

Then match the ending to the noun: który/która/które/którzy or jaki/jaka/jakie/jacy, and remember the comma.

Common pitfalls to watch for

  • Wrong comma: always put a comma before the relative pronoun in these structures.
  • Wrong plural type: people-plural is special: goście, którzy… (not które).
  • Don’t translate “what” automatically as co: in indirect questions about type/which value, Polish often prefers jaki/jaka/jakie.
  1. We use the pronoun Który when we talk about items “chosen” from a specific number of options.
  2. We use the pronoun Jaki when we mean items from a more undefined set of possibilities.
  3. When który and jaki are used as relative pronouns, they must be preceded by a comma.
