Static vs dynamic: one decision first

Step 1: Look at the verb. Are you staying somewhere or moving somewhere?

• If you can answer Gdzie? → you are describing a place (static).
• If you can answer Dokąd? → you are naming a destination (dynamic).

The core pairs: w ↔ do and na ↔ na

Polish often uses a pair: one preposition for “being there”, another for “going there”.

• w answers “where (inside)?” and needs locative.
• do answers “to where?” and needs genitive.
• na is special: it can be both static and dynamic, so the case tells you which one it is.

“u” = at someone’s place (not “to”)

u is about being at a person’s place / under someone’s care (often not a building name).

• Think: u = “at (their) place”.
• For movement to a person/professional, Polish still uses do: Idę do dentysty (I’m going to the dentist).

You do not need the full declension table every time. Learn a few high-frequency patterns.

Typical adult contexts (correct mini-models)

• Work: Jestem w biurze. → Idę do biura.
• Meeting/event: Jestem na konferencji. → Idę na konferencję.
• Lunch: Jestem na obiedzie. → Idę na obiad.
• Family visit: Jestem u rodziny. → Jadę do rodziny.
• Medical appointment: Jestem u lekarza. → Idę do lekarza.

Common pitfalls (and how to self-correct)

• Pitfall 1: mixing static and dynamic
  Jestem do kawiarni. → Jestem w kawiarni.
  Idę w kawiarni. → Idę do kawiarni.
• Pitfall 2: “na” needs the right case
  Static (where?): na + locative: na spotkaniu
  Dynamic (to where?): na + accusative: na spotkanie
• Pitfall 3: “u” is not a destination preposition
  Idę u lekarza. → Idę do lekarza.
  u lekarza is what you say when you are already there.
