Numerals in the genitive: dwie walizki, pięć walizek

What’s the main idea?

In Polish, after a numeral, the noun form changes. The key split is:

• 2–4 → noun in nominative plural
• 5 and more + words like dużo / mało / kilka / wiele → noun in genitive plural

Plus, with masculine-person groups (men), you often use a different “how many” question: ilu?

Step 1: Choose the question word: ile? vs ilu?

• ile? = “how many?” for things, women, mixed groups, animals
• ilu? = “how many?” mainly for masculine-person plural (groups of men):
  ilu programistów? ilu klientów?

Shortcut: If the noun is masculine-person plural (often ends like -i/-y in nominative plural, e.g. programiści), expect ilu and genitive plural.

Step 2: Decide: 2–4 or 5+?

Self-check: If you say pięć or kilka and the noun looks like a normal plural (e.g. pięć walizki), it’s probably wrong.

The form of the numeral changes with ilu? (dwóch / trzech / czterech…)

With ilu? you do not use dwa / trzy / cztery. You use the genitive-style numeral forms:

• 2–4 (ilu?): dwóch, trzech, czterech
• 5+ (ilu?): pięciu, sześciu, dwunastu, …
• also: kilku, wielu, mało, dużo

And the noun after ilu? is always genitive plural:

• Brakuje dwóch plecaków.
• W firmie pracuje dwóch programistów.
• Na spotkaniu nie było trzech klientów.

Why is it genitive plural so often? (Meaning: “of …”)

Polish often treats quantities like a “container” idea:

• pięć walizek ≈ “five of suitcases”
• kilka leków ≈ “a few of medicines”

This is why the noun switches to genitive plural after 5+ and quantity words.

Mini checklist before you speak

1. Is it “ile?” or “ilu?” (men as a group → often ilu)
2. Is the number 2–4 or 5+?
3. Pick the noun form:
   • 2–4 + nominative plural
   • 5+ / dużo / mało / kilka / wiele + genitive plural
   • ilu? → numeral form dwóch/trzech/czterech… + noun genitive plural

Typical errors to avoid (fast fixes)

• Wrong case after 5+:
  • pięć walizki → pięć walizek
  • kilka leki → kilka leków
• Using “dwa/trzy/cztery” with ilu?:
  • ilu dwa programiści? → ilu dwóch programistów?
• Mixing forms after “brakuje” (it requires genitive):
  • Brakuje mi dwa dokumenty. → Brakuje mi dwóch dokumentów.
