Direct and indirect speech

When changing direct speech into reported speech in Polish, remember to change the verb person, change the pronoun, and use the appropriate conjunction.

Reported speech in Polish: choosing że, żeby, or czy

In Polish, reported speech (“X says/asks…”) usually needs one of three connectors:

że = “that” (information / statement)
żeby (+ personal forms: żebym, żebyś, żebyśmy, żebyście) = “(so) that / to” (request, instruction, suggestion)
czy = “whether/if” (yes/no question)

Step 1: Identify what the original sentence is

Step 2: Choose the right reporting verb

Pick a verb that matches the intention. Common pairs are imperfective/perfective:

mówić / powiedzieć (say)
pisać / napisać (write)
twierdzić / stwierdzić (claim/state)
wiedzieć (know) + że
prosić / poprosić, namawiać / namówić, proponować / zaproponować + żeby…
pytać / zapytać + czy

Tip: The connector is determined by the meaning (statement vs request vs question), not by the tense.

Step 3: Change the person and pronouns (the most common mistake)

In reported speech you speak from your perspective, so pronouns often change.

Direct speech	Reported speech (I report it)
Ewa: „Przygotuj raport!”	Ewa mówi, żebym przygotowała raport.
Ewa: „Czy prowadziłaś telekonferencję?”	Ewa pyta, czy prowadziłam telekonferencję.
Szef: „Masz dziś termin.”	Szef mówi, że mam dziś termin.

Direct “you” often becomes I in the report: masz → mam.
Also check object pronouns: mi / mnie, ci / tobie, mu / jemu, jej etc.

How żeby works: use the right form (żebym, żebyś…)

żeby links to the person who should do the action:

Meaning	Polish form	Example
…that I (should)	żebym	Poprosiła, żebym wysłał e-mail.
…that you (should)	żebyś	Proszę, żebyś zadzwonił jutro.
…that he/she (should)	żeby	Chce, żeby ona przygotowała slajdy.
…that we (should)	żebyśmy	Proponuje, żebyśmy zaczęli o 9:00.
…that you (plural) (should)	żebyście	Prosi, żebyście dali znać do piątku.
…that they (should)	żeby	Chce, żeby oni podpisali umowę.

Watch out: Don’t use że for requests. Use żeby/żebym…

Word order: Polish stays flexible, but keep it clear

Most common pattern: Verb + connector + clause
Connector first after the verb: Powiedział, że… / Poprosiła, żebym… / Zapytał, czy…
Polish does not force the verb to the end like German. Keep natural Polish order.

Mini self-check (before you submit an answer)

Is it information? → use że.
Is it a request/command/suggestion? → use żeby (+ correct person: żebym/żebyś…).
Is it a yes/no question? → use czy.
Did I change perspective? (ty → ja, mój → mój/twój, etc.)
Does the verb form match the new subject? (mam/masz/ma/mamy…)

Exercise 2: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Change direct speech into indirect speech: use an appropriate verb (e.g. says, asks, requests, writes, suggests) and the conjunction że / żeby / czy (that / so that / whether) and change the person and pronouns.
