Reflexive pronouns: się vs siebie

We use the reflexive pronouns się and siebie when the action concerns the same person who performs it — się appears only in the genitive and accusative, and siebie is declined in all cases.

What “się” really is (and what it is not)

Się is a reflexive element: it points back to the subject (≈ “myself/yourself/himself…”).

  • It does not change for person: I, you, she, we… all use się.
  • It has no nominative (“I” form) in Polish. You never say “*ja się*” to mean “I myself”.
  • Sometimes it is a true pronoun (myję się), sometimes it is part of a verb meaning (bać się = to be afraid).

Two choices: short “się” vs. case forms (siebie / sobie / sobą)

Think in two steps:

  1. If the verb is reflexive (dictionary form often includes “się”) → use się.
  2. If the sentence forces a case (often after a preposition) → use the longer form: siebie / sobie / sobą.
Typical signal Use Example (correct) Common mistake
Reflexive verb (no preposition) się Myję się. (I wash.) Myję siebie. (possible, but unnatural here)
Preposition + “self” meaning siebie / sobie / sobą Dbam o siebie. (I take care of myself.) Dbam o się.

Quick map: which form after which “trigger”

When you see these patterns, choose the longer form:

  • bez + Genitivebez siebie
    Nie mogę żyć bez siebie.
  • o + Locativeo sobie
    Nie lubię mówić o sobie.
  • z/ze + Instrumentalze sobą
    Kłócą się ze sobą.
  • dla + Dative idea (“for my own benefit/pleasure”) → often sobie
    Kupiłem sobie nowy komputer.

“Kupiłem sobie…”: why dative “sobie” is so common

Sobie often means: “for myself / for my own use / as a treat”. It’s very natural in everyday Polish.

  • Kupiłam sobie nowe perfumy. (I bought myself new perfume.)
  • Zrobię sobie kawę. (I’ll make myself a coffee.)

If it sounds like a small personal benefit, sobie is a good candidate.

When “się” is NOT “myself”: impersonal meaning

mówi się / robi się can mean “people say / one does”. The subject is general, not a specific person.

  • W Polsce mówi się, że… (In Poland people say that…)
  • Tutaj nie pali się. (You don’t smoke here / Smoking is not allowed here.)

Tip: if English uses “people/one/they”, Polish often uses się.

“Się” position: what sounds natural

  • Usually after the verb: Myję się., Goli się.
  • With an infinitive: Chcę się umyć. (I want to wash.)
  • With negation: Nie porównuj się.

Avoid putting się at the very beginning of a sentence.

Self-check: choose the form in 10 seconds

  1. Do you see a preposition right before “self”? (o, bez, z/ze, dla…) → use siebie/sobie/sobą.
  2. No preposition: is it a reflexive verb (habit/action on yourself)? → use się.
  3. Is the meaning “people/one”? → likely się (impersonal).

Mini contrasts to remember

  • Porównywać się (compare yourself) vs. porównywać kogoś (compare someone):
    Nie porównuj się z innymi.
  • Dbać o siebie (take care of yourself) needs o + Locative:
Dbam o siebie. (not o się)
  • Kłócić się (argue) + “with each other” → ze sobą:
Oni często kłócą się ze sobą.
  1. The short form “się” is a reflexive pronoun that forms reflexive verbs, e.g. myję się (myję siebie).
  2. The particle “się” can also form impersonal constructions, e.g. mówi się / mówiło się (that is: ludzie mówią / mówiono).
  3. The dative form “sobie” is often used in informal speech, e.g. potańczyli sobie trochę (that is: trochę potańczyli dla przyjemności).
  4. "Się" is the short form (very often used). It is used mainly with reflexive verbs.
  5. "Siebie", "sobie", etc. are longer forms, used when the sentence requires a specific case (often after prepositions).
