The core idea: verb + case (not “logic”)

In Polish, some verbs require a specific case. It’s not optional.

• zajmować się + narzędnik (instrumental) = “to deal with / take care of”
• kierować + narzędnik (instrumental) = “to manage / to drive (a vehicle)”
• prowadzić + biernik (accusative) = “to run / to lead / to conduct”

What to pay attention to: English doesn’t show these endings, but Polish does—so you must change the noun form.

Meaning check: which verb do you want?

• zajmować się focuses on taking care of/handling something.
• kierować focuses on being the person who controls/steers (a team, a project, a vehicle).
• prowadzić focuses on running/leading an activity or organization.

Instrumental (narzędnik): the form after zajmować się / kierować

After zajmować się and kierować, use narzędnik.

Accusative (biernik): the form after prowadzić

After prowadzić, use biernik (accusative).

Note: for “driving,” both exist, but the grammar differs:

• kierować + instrumental → more formal/“control the vehicle”: kierować samochodem
• prowadzić + accusative → common everyday “drive”: prowadzić samochód

Mini “endings radar” for narzędnik (A2-friendly)

Instrumental often looks like this:

• -em (many masculine/neuter): samochód → samochodem, projekt → projektem
• -ą (many feminine): firma → firmą
• -ami (plural): finanse → finansami, dzieci → dziećmi

Don’t try to guess every ending perfectly at first—train your eye to notice: “This verb needs instrumental.”

1. What do I mean?
   • take care / deal with → zajmować się
   • manage / be in charge of; drive (formal) → kierować
   • run/lead (company/meeting); drive (everyday) → prowadzić
2. Which case does this verb require?
   • zajmować się → instrumental
   • kierować → instrumental
   • prowadzić → accusative
3. Final quick scan: if you see się in zajmować się, it still needs a case after it: się + narzędnik.

One more reminder: other verbs have their own fixed patterns

Just like here, many Polish verbs “come with” a preposition + case:

• czekać na + biernik
• myśleć o + miejscownik
• bać się + dopełniacz
