Imperative mood: ćwicz! nie ćwicz!

Get your book

The imperative mood is a verb form used when we tell someone what to do.

What you are doing here: the Polish imperative

Tryb rozkazujący = the form you use to tell, ask, or instruct someone to do something.

  • Ty = one person (“you” singular): Pisz! (Write!)
  • My = “let’s …”: Piszmy! (Let’s write!)
  • Wy = a group / formal “you”: Piszcie! (Write! – plural)

Build it step by step (most common pattern)

  1. Start with the Ty form (this is the base form you learn first).

  2. Then add endings to get My and Wy:

    Person Formula Example
Ty base imperative pisz!, pij!, rób!, chodź!
My Ty + -my piszmy!, pijmy!, róbmy!, chodźmy!
Wy Ty + -cie piszcie!, pijcie!, róbcie!, chodźcie!

How to say “don’t …” (negation)

Negation is straightforward:

nie + imperative

  • Nie pisz! = Don’t write!
  • Nie rób! = Don’t do (it)!
  • Nie chodź! = Don’t walk / don’t go (on foot)!

Watch out: Don’t “double-negate” by accident:

  • Nie nie pisz! ✅ Nie pisz!

The three high-frequency irregulars (learn as fixed forms)

These are so common that it’s best to memorize them as complete chunks:

Infinitive Ty (imperative) My Wy
być bądź! bądźmy! bądźcie!
mieć miej! miejmy! miejcie!
chcieć chciej! chciejmy! chciejcie!

Common confusion: imperative vs. “you (plural) …” statements

Polish often looks similar, but the meaning changes:

Type Form Meaning
Imperative (instruction) Piszcie! Write! (please do it now)
Present tense (information) Piszecie. You (plural) write / are writing.
Imperative (instruction) Chodźcie! Come / Let’s go (you all)!
Present tense (information) Chodzicie. You (plural) go / walk.

Polite requests: where “proszę” fits

  • proszę can soften the command into a request.

  • It often appears after the verb or as a separate word:

    • Piszcie, proszę, swoje imiona. = Please write your names.
    • Proszę pisać. = Please write. (more formal / general instruction)

Self-check: choose the correct person quickly

  • One person (friend, colleague you address as “ty”): use Ty → pisz!
  • A group (team, class): use Wy → piszcie!
  • Including yourself (“let’s…”): use My → piszmy!
  • Negative? Add nie in front → Nie rób!
  1. We most often form the imperative for the “ty” (“you”, singular) form, e.g. pisać → pisz! ; robić → rób!
  2. We form the negative with "nie" + tryb rozkazujący, e.g. Pisz! → Nie pisz!; Rób! → Nie rób!
Bezokolicznik (Infinitive)Ty (You (singular))My (We)Wy (You (plural))
pisać (to write)pisz! (write!)piszmy! (let’s write!)piszcie! (write! (plural))
pić (to drink)pij! (drink!)pijmy! (let’s drink!)pijcie! (drink! (plural))
robić (to do)rób! (do!)róbmy! (let’s do!)róbcie! (do! (plural))
chodzić (to walk)chodź! (come!/walk!)chodźmy! (let’s go!)chodźcie! (come!/walk! (plural))

Exceptions!

  1. być → bądź!
  2. mieć → miej!
  3. chcieć → chciej!
