Complex sentences with the conjunction "żeby"

Spójnika żeby używamy, żeby wskazać cel czynności.

(We use the conjunction żeby to indicate the purpose of an action.)

What “żeby + personal form” does

Use żeby to express a request, recommendation, or instruction directed at someone.

  • English idea: “(someone) asked/recommended that (someone) should…”
  • Very common after: prosić (to ask), zalecić (to recommend), powiedzieć (to say/tell), chcieć (to want)

Two patterns: purpose vs. request (don’t mix them)

Key point: In the “request/recommendation” meaning, Polish uses a past-tense form after żeby, even if it refers to the present/future.

How to build it (step by step)

  1. Step 1: Choose the right “żeby” form (who should do it?)

  2. Step 2: Use a past-tense verb form (often with -ł/-ła/-li/-ły)

    • żebym pił / piła
    • żebyś trzymał / trzymała dietę
    • żebyśmy kupili / kupiły

    This looks like “past”, but the meaning is: what someone should do (now/soon).

Word order: where “nie” and pronouns go

  • Negation: put nie directly before the verb.

    Mówiłam, żeby Michał nie jadł tyle fast foodów.

  • Object pronouns (go/it/me/him) usually come before the verb.

    Poprosiłam, żebyś to kupił. (I asked you to buy it.)

Common pitfalls (quick fixes)

  • Don’t use the infinitive for a request.

    Lekarz zalecił, żebym pić więcej wody.

    Correct: Lekarz zalecił, żebym pił więcej wody.

  • Don’t forget the person in 3rd person: use żeby + subject.

    Mówiłam, żeby nie jadł tyle fast foodów. (unclear: who?)

    Better: Mówiłam, żeby Michał nie jadł tyle fast foodów.

  • Match gender/number in the past form when needed.

    Chciałabym, żebyś trzymał dietę. (to a man)

    Chciałabym, żebyś trzymała dietę. (to a woman)

Self-check: choose the right form in 10 seconds

  1. Is it a goal? → żeby + infinitive

  2. Is it a request/recommendation? → żeby + past tense

  3. Who should do it? → pick: żebym / żebyś / żeby / żebyśmy / żebyście

  4. Put nie right before the verb if negative.
