What “żeby” does (two main uses)

żeby is very common in Polish and has two practical meanings:

• purpose = “in order to / so as to”
• request / wish about someone’s action = “(I want/ask) someone to … / that someone …”

Use 1: Purpose → “żeby + infinitive” (same subject)

Use this when the same person does both actions.

• Think: I do X, (so) to do Y.
• After żeby you normally use the dictionary form (infinitive): kupić, zrobić, odpocząć, nauczyć się.

Common mistake: don’t put a personal verb after żeby in purpose sentences.

• Idę do sklepu, żeby kupuję chleb.
• Idę do sklepu, żeby kupić chleb.

Use 2: Request/wish → “żeby + personal form” (different subject)

Use this when you talk about another person’s action (what you want them to do).

Why the verb looks like “past” after żeby (A2-friendly rule)

After żeby (in requests/wishes), Polish often uses a form that looks like past:

• odpoczął / odpoczęła / odpoczęli
• przyszedł / przyszła / przyszli
• zrobił / zrobiła / zrobili

But the meaning is usually present/future:

• Chcę, żebyś przyszedł. = I want you to come.
• Proszę, żeby pan poczekał. = Please wait.

2. If not: “Am I talking about what another person should do?”

Note: With on/ona/oni there is no special “żeby-” ending. You simply use żeby and then the verb.
