Expressing opinions and (dis)agreement: Wydaje mi się, że, Masz rację, Nie zgadzam się z tobą

What these phrases do (and when to use them)

• Wyrażasz opinię = you introduce your view (soft or formal).
• Zgadzasz się z rozmówcą = you show agreement (neutral → strong).
• Nie zgadzasz się z rozmówcą = you show disagreement (direct → diplomatic).

In Polish, these are often used as ready-made “conversation frames”. Learn them as whole blocks and then add your sentence.

Opinion starters: the key pattern (what comes next?)

Most opinion starters are followed by że (“that”) + a normal sentence.

• Tip: put a short pause after the frame, then continue normally.
• Comma: in writing you usually put a comma before że: Wydaje mi się, że…

“Z mojego punktu widzenia” vs “Według mnie”

• Z mojego punktu widzenia = “from my point of view” (more formal, sounds professional).
• Według mnie = “in my opinion / according to me” (neutral, very common).

Both are followed by a normal sentence (no special verb form needed):

• Z mojego punktu widzenia to jest ryzykowne.
• Według mnie potrzebujemy więcej czasu.

Agreement: how strong do you want to sound?

Pronoun reminder: zgadzać się needs z + Instrumental:

• Zgadzam się z tobą.
• Zgadzam się z panem / z panią. (formal)

Disagreement: direct vs diplomatic

Polish offers both blunt and polite options. Choose based on the situation.

A2 structure you’ll meet: “Trzeba też wziąć pod uwagę, że…”

This phrase is great for disagreeing without saying “no”. It adds another factor.

• Trzeba też wziąć pod uwagę, że not everyone will accept these terms.
• Trzeba też wziąć pod uwagę, że we have a deadline on Friday.

Focus point: after że you again use a normal sentence.

Self-check: choose the best frame for your intention

1. Do I want to sound neutral or strong?
2. Am I giving my opinion (Wydaje mi się, że…) or reacting to theirs (Masz rację / Nie zgadzam się…)?
3. If I disagree, can I first use a softener?
   • Widzę to inaczej.
   • Trzeba też wziąć pod uwagę, że…

Common mistakes to avoid (quick fixes)

• Missing “że” after opinion frames:
  • Wydaje mi się to jest dobry pomysł.
  • Wydaje mi się, że to jest dobry pomysł.
• Wrong preposition with “zgadzać się”:
  • Nie zgadzam się do tobą.
  • Nie zgadzam się z tobą.
• Too direct for work situations (when you want to stay diplomatic):
  • Instead of To nieprawda. try Nie sądzę, żeby to było prawdą.
  • Instead of Nie masz racji. try Widzę to inaczej.
