Time and place: kiedy, aż, gdzie

Czas i miejsce: kiedy, aż, gdzie

Zdanie podrzędne określa okoliczności (czas lub miejsce) czynności z głównego zdania. Pytania dla czasu to: kiedy?, od kiedy?, jak długo?, a dla miejsca: gdzie?, dokąd?

(A subordinate clause specifies the circumstances (time or place) of the action from the main clause. Questions for time are: when?, since when?, how long?, and for place: where?, to where?)

What these words do (time & place clauses)

These are short connectors that let you add extra information about when something happens or where something is.

kiedy when / whenever Sprawdzam nowe wiadomości, kiedy dostaję powiadomienie.
aż until (a moment happens) Czekam, aż skończę pracę, i dopiero wtedy odpisuję.
gdzie where Jesteśmy w miejscu, gdzie nie ma internetu.

The one rule you must not miss: the comma

  • Put a comma before: kiedy, aż, gdzie.
  • This comma separates the main clause from the subordinate clause.

Pattern: Main clause + , kiedy/aż/gdzie + subordinate clause

  • Odpisuję na wiadomość, kiedy mam czas.
  • Nie wysyłam e-maila, aż sprawdzę załącznik.
  • Pracuję tam, gdzie jest ciszej.

Choosing the right connector: quick decision

  1. Are you answering “When?” → use kiedy.
  2. Are you answering “Until when?” (you wait and then something changes) → use aż.
  3. Are you answering “Where?” → use gdzie.
kiedy repeated situations, routine, general time Kiedy dostaję powiadomienie, od razu sprawdzam telefon.
aż a boundary point: “not before X happens” Zaczekaj, aż skończę spotkanie.
gdzie place (often after: miejsce, tam, tu, strona, firma) To jest strona, gdzie możesz zmienić hasło.

Word order: what stays “normal” in Polish

Unlike German, Polish does not push the verb to the end in subordinate clauses.

  • Sprawdzam wiadomości, kiedy dostaję powiadomienie. (normal verb position)
  • Czekam, aż skończę pracę. (normal verb position)
  • Mieszkam tam, gdzie nie ma zasięgu. (normal verb position)

Tip: Focus on the comma and the connector. Word order is flexible and usually intuitive.

Common confusions (and fast fixes)

  • kiedy vs a kiedy

    a kiedy is often used in questions to switch topic: “and when…?”

    Wysyłasz raport dzisiaj. A kiedy będzie prezentacja?

  • aż is not “when”

    It means you wait up to a point.

    Wyślę to, aż skończę. → Wyślę to, kiedy skończę. (meaning “when I finish”)

    Nie wyślę tego, aż skończę. (meaning “not until I finish”)

  • gdzie vs dokąd

    gdzie = where (location). dokąd = to where (direction).

    To jest biuro, gdzie pracuję. / To jest biuro, dokąd jadę.

Self-check before you speak

  1. Did I add the comma?
  2. Am I describing time (kiedy / aż) or place (gdzie)?
  3. If it’s aż, do I mean a clear “not before” point?

Mini goal: In conversation, try to produce one longer sentence with kiedy or aż instead of two short sentences.
