Time and place: kiedy, aż, gdzie

A subordinate clause specifies the circumstances (time or place) of the action in the main clause. The questions for time are: when?, since when?, how long?, and for place: where?, where to?

What these words do (quick idea)

kiedy, aż, and gdzie connect two parts of a sentence.

kiedy = when (time)
aż = until (time limit / waiting for a result)
gdzie = where (place)

They introduce a subordinate clause: information about time or place.

Choose the right connector: a simple decision

You mean…	Use	Typical English cue
Time: two actions happen at the same time / regularly	kiedy	when / whenever (but Polish uses kiedy here)
Time: you wait and something must happen first (endpoint)	aż	until / until (the moment) / until (I finish…)
Place: you talk about a location and add extra information about it	gdzie	where

Word order you should copy (safe pattern)

In Polish the connector often comes after a comma, and the verb stays “normal” (no special inversion like in English questions).

How “aż” behaves (the common trap)

aż usually means: wait / keep doing X up to the moment when Y happens.

It often appears with verbs like: czekać (to wait), zostać (to stay), nie wysyłać (not to send), nie wychodzić (not to leave).
The clause after aż is a condition that must be completed.

Compare:

kiedy = “at the time when” (more neutral)
Oddzwonię, kiedy będę wolny. = I’ll call back when I’m free.
aż = “not before / only after” (endpoint)
Nie oddzwonię, aż będę wolny. = I won’t call back until I’m free.

“gdzie” = place + extra information (like “the place where…”)

Use gdzie to attach a description to a place.

tam, gdzie… = there where… (very common)
w miejscu, gdzie… = in a place where… (more formal)

Natural	Meaning
Nie mogę się zalogować tam, gdzie nie ma zasięgu.	I can’t log in where there is no signal.
Spotkajmy się w kawiarni, gdzie jest cicho.	Let’s meet in a café where it’s quiet.

Comma: when you need it (practical rule)

When the connector introduces a second clause, you normally use a comma:

Main clause, kiedy / aż / gdzie + clause
