Cause: bo, dlatego, że...

Przyczyna: bo, dlatego, że...

Zdania okolicznikowe przyczyny odpowiadają na pytanie dlaczego? i wyrażają powód czynności np. Nie przyszłam do pracy, bo byłam chora.

(Adverbial clauses of cause answer the question “why?” and express the reason for an action, e.g. Nie przyszłam do pracy, bo byłam chora.)

What these words do: giving a reason

All three connectors introduce a cause / reason (English: because / since).

  • bo = most common in everyday speech
  • ponieważ = more neutral / slightly more formal
  • dlatego że = explicit “for the reason that”, often used when you want to sound precise

Choose the right one (quick decision)

Sentence pattern (what to watch)

In Polish, after these connectors you usually say a normal clause (no special word order like in German).

  • Main clause + connector + reason

ponieważ Nie mogę pracować na pełen etat, ponieważ studiuję wieczorami.
dlatego że Wybrałam tę firmę, dlatego że oferuje elastyczny czas pracy.

Very common mistakes (and how to fix them)

  • 1) Adding “że” where it doesn’t belong

    bo że / ponieważ że → use just bo or ponieważ.

    Correct: Proszę o umowę o pracę, bo chcę płatny urlop.

  • 2) Confusing “dlatego” with “dlatego że”

    • dlatego = “therefore / that’s why” (result)
    • dlatego że = “because” (reason)

    Reason: Wybrałam tę firmę, dlatego że oferuje elastyczny czas pracy.

    Result: Oferuje elastyczny czas pracy, dlatego wybrałam tę firmę.

Meaning check: reason vs result (self-test)

  1. Ask: “Why?” → you need bo / ponieważ / dlatego że.

    Example: Dlaczego nie przyjęłaś oferty? — Nie przyjęłam, bo pensja była za niska.

  2. Ask: “So what happened as a result?” → you likely need dlatego (not dlatego że).

    Example: Pensja była za niska, dlatego nie przyjęłam oferty.

What you can say now (ready-to-use patterns)

  • Nie mogę…, bo… (simple, spoken)
  • Zdecydowałem/-am się na…, ponieważ… (neutral, professional)
  • Wybrałem/-am…, dlatego że… (explicit justification)
